2000 expy rear end
My 9.75 rear axle is making constant wirr sounds when pushing the gas pedal. It also chatters some at stop and go turns.
I was wondering what's my cheapest route I can go here? Do I need a full bearing kit and a full rebuild kit? Wish they had a cheap mini spool... I want to try and do myself.
any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated

If it has a traction lock you probably only need to change the diff fluid and add 2 bottles of Ford friction modifier. MY 2000 F150 5.4 had a TL and it started chattering on corners at about 80K miles. A fluid change didn't fix the chattering until I added a second bottle of FM. Seems the 2000 TLs were set up a little too tight. There was a tech bulletin from Ford saying to rebuild the TL and reduce the shim preload by 0.010". But a second bottle of FM did the job by getting rid of the chattering. I know this Diff lasted 170K miles before I lost track of it.

Yes the chatter was gone on our short 15 mile trip to town or so with a couple stop and turns.

If a bearing is bad and not knowing which one it is, the diff will need to be disassembled, cleaned, and new bearing(s) installed. It is best left to professionals. if you want to try it yourself, you will need a dial indicator to set backlash, and a special tool to help crush the pinion preload spacer. Also a torque wrench is needed to check the pinion preload that measures in in. lbs., as well as another torque wrench to measure bolt torques. Find a shop that has experience with diffs and let them do it. If I had the problem, i would take it to the local 4x4 shop because they change gear ratios a lot and work for a lot less than the dealer.

Anyone run one of these? For the price I may as well just go this way then pay someone the same to rebuild it...
