IWE Problems

Trying to fix a family members 06 F-150. No 4WD. Light comes on on dash, transfer case clicks/clunks, and low range engages, but no power to front wheels. First off we replaced the IWE solenoid as it was the old style non hooded version. No difference. Next step we jacked up the front end, unhooked the vac line at the actuator(both left and right side), spun the wheel, and the half shafts on either side did not spin. Am I correct in thinking they should lock and spin the half shafts when vac line is disconnected? What is the chance of BOTH actuators needing replaced? This is a recently purchased used truck, so it may have come this way. Just noticed it as we got our first snow fall.

With no vacuum, or with lines disconnected, the tires should spint the half shafts. You have seized or stuck IWE's.

So yes, you are correct.

Thanks for the verification! Are the IWE actuators serviceable at all or is it basically replace them?

The actuator portion can be replaced, but the units are not serviceable as far as replacing bearings and such. After engagement problems, the teeth on the engagement dog also get worn and make for sloppy engagement over time. Considering the time involved and price of individual replacement parts, I opted to just replace the entire assy at once.

I replaced whole IWE's on mine with Moog replacement units. Took about 200 beans and 45 minutes per side. One side had a bad bearing, so I replaced em both at the same time. Everything works like new and quiet as a church mouse now.
