Exclamation Does anybody have a 99 4x2 with 3.73 gears (stock)

In a recent comparision done by a magazine they compared full size trucks.
(There is more about this in computer chips section)
They showed a Ford 4x2 with 3.73 gears as one of the competitors according to what I remember 3.73 wasn't offered on 4x2 in '99.
If anyone knows otherwise please post.

54regcab, you're right. The 3.73 is only available on 4x4 models.

Yeah but did you guys see the tread in the computer chips section where they raced the stock F150 that supposedly had these gears?
If they got that wrong perhaps there other things wrong with the article.

Can't say about 2000s, but nowhere in the 99 owners manual is 3.73 listed for F150 except 4x4 supercab 5.4L auto.
If anybody has a F150 4x2 3.73 stock gears please post here.
Ture on page 35 of "the book" it does list 3.73 as option on XLT and Larait.
You will also notice on page 36 of "the book" 3rd column about 1/2 way down when you look up 4x2 towing capacity with 5.4L 3.73 gear there is just a dash there no #'s.

Wink

The only requirement for the 3.73 axle..that I see in the 99 booklet..is that you had to have the 5.4L V8. It says nothing about having 4x2 or 4x4..it does say it is only an option for XLT and Lariat...not offered at all for the other trim levels.

The 3.73 rear axle for 2000 is only offered with the 5.4L V8 in the 7700 payload group. 4x2 or 4x4 allowed.

Correct 54regcab..
I see it on pg 36..a dash under the 4x2 F-150 column..
Now look down at the F250 stats..the 4x2 5.4L V8 DOES have ##'s Notice that the 4.6L V8, F250 with the 3.73 rear also has ##'s? Weird!
Maybe the ##'s for the F-150 were not available for printing???

You win...I'll give you this one until a 4x2 F-150 owner comes forward...

hahahahhaha!!

Question

Hi 54regcab,

What does it actually mean:limited slip 3.55
or 3.73
I see so many questions about this number.
Is it that important?
How can I find out what I have?

Cool

Since your truck is almost identcal to mine I imagine you have the 3.55 like I do.
The number means how many times the driveshaft turns to make the rear wheels turn once.
A higher number means the engine will rev higher at any given speed.
The designation LS just means limited slip.

3:55 means it takes the driveshaft 3.55 times to turn the wheels one whole time. 3;73 means to turn the driveshaft 3.73 times to get one tire rotation. The lower the gears, like 4:10, 4:30, are quick off the line, but get bad gas mileage and low top end. High gears, 2:83, 3:08 get good mileage but are dogs off the line, but good top end.

Thanks 54regcab and fast46triton.
I knew it had something to do with gearing but didn't know about the driveshaft.
How many turns it had to make,I mean.

But how can you tell which gearing you have?

3.08 or 3.55

My truck came with hitch installed.
But don't know if it was factory installed or installed by the dealer who shipped the truck to Europe.
For towing it is better to have the 3.55 axle.(3.73 even better)I quess.
If the hitch was factory installed would they have changed the gearing then, knowing the truck is going to be used for towing.
