Rear Axle Clicking Noise

I have a 1998 Ford Expedition XLT w/ 5.4L engine. When I haul my 7x14 Hualmark box trailer in 2WD there is a clicking noise coming from the rear axle when making right and left hand turns. I sometimes hear it when making turns w/o the trailer but it is very quiet and intermittent. It is a lot louder and constant in turns when towing so I can only assume that there is a problem with the rear axle and it is exaggerated when the rear end is weighted down. If memory serves it is louder when turning left versus right.

Any ideas?

First thing to check will be U-joints. They do click when bad.
