so you mean to tell me.. (gear related)

Hey guys i have been reviewing threads and checking with local shops about a gear change. I have been told anything from 4.10s, 4.30s, 4.56s and surprisingly 3.73s by a local shop who also mentioned changing bearings as part of the job and said 3.73s would be fine since i am not running much difference in tire size. Im running 305/70/16 on an 02 auto 8.8 rearend 2wd. To me, it seems like a big difference in tire size compared to stock. Ive also read i can actually lose top end speed changing gears? What im really getting at is a gear change needed at all? I tow a jet ski in the spring/summer and thats about all the towing i do. What about the bearings, do they need replacing to do the job right? Engine is 4.6

depends on which ratio they have. the internet says that rearend can have anywhere from a 2.26 to a 4.10. that tire size isnt even a 33, and a jet ski cant weigh that much. imho i wouldnt be doing a regear

Well, to give to an idea of what the difference is, for each .25 gear ratio change, the rpms change by 300.....so this should help give you a better feel.

You shouldn't need to spend the bucks for a gear change. However, I would get a programmer so you can correct the speedo/odo for the larger tires and pick up some power with some tunes.
