Why doesn't my 4WD floor shifter go into low?

It goes into Hi just fine everytime no problem or sounds. When I get past N and try to shift over to Low it makes terrible racheting sounds. What is going on?

are you putting the truck in Neutral?

to shift into 4lo the truck has to be in neutral.

and its also really bad for the Transferrcase to engage on pavement, or other high traction areas.

And stopped with your foot on the brake.

Thanks guys I'm not sure what is wrong but I am trying to engage it correctly with it in N and foot on brake. I use to use it and it went in fine but now uh...... no.

the nut holding the steering wheel needs to be replaced

it's probably the above mentioned fork

let me look through my receipts and ill get you the price of the part and labor at the local ford dealer.

Brad6412 08-02-2009 07:41 PM

just looked, the labor was $158.xx and the part itself was 196.xx coming to a total of 355.xx for rvrything installed. that fork is what physically pushes the TC into gear. so that most likely your problem.

Thanks Brad for the help and finding that for me. I will check into it.
