Review of Clear-Gearz Differential Cover

Well guy's when I changed out my gears a few years ago I bent the stock cover just enough that I couldn't get it to seal up good.

So I bought a Clear-Gearz cover. At the time they were about $100 and I thought, cool, I can check fluid levels, check for water in the oil, etc., all without even crawling under my truck too far.

Well it eventually started leaking a little. Not enough to drip but enough to make a mess, then finally I noticed a few drips.

I was going to take off the cover and reseal it when I found out why it was leaking. A corner of the cover had broken right next to a bolt.

I don't know how this happened but I know that I didn't have the bolts torqued down too tight.

Any way. My suggestion is to suck it up and spend the money on something like a Mag-Hytech. I got my for $260 from their website.

It has a drain plug, dip stick, it's really strong, and maybe the best thing is that it has an O-ring with it so you don't have to mess with any gasket maker.

Here's a pic of where the Clear-Gearz broke.

Ever write to clear gearz to see what they would say about it?

efuehrin 07-30-2009 11:20 AM

No, I would think that they might give me a new cover for free but I wouldn't even want to put another one on.

This Mag-Hytec cover is just that much better I don't even want to jack with it.

i'll say this. my clear gears took several ring gear bolts being dragged through it. still dont leak. you must've clipped something somehow

Looks good its one of the many things to add to the truck but it may be awhile haha

I don't know if I'd put a plastic cover on my differential in the first place.

Klitch 07-31-2009 12:35 PM

why not? have you looked at how many other covers are plastic anymore? what are u gonna do that a steel cover would be better that plastic? not like ur gonna rub anything with it

I definitely like the mag, when it comes time for one I am definitely going to be switching to a mag.

Just curious, but got any pics of what the clear cover looked like right after you installed it? I was just curious to see how much of the gears and diff were actually sitting in the oil.

Sorry I can't find anything.

Just about half of the ring was in oil.

A little under actually.

It's just not my thing. I don't like the though of a piece of plastic taking the place of a solid piece of steel.
