Squeak from driveshaft?

Seems I am getting a squeakin gnoise from my drivetrain when I go from a complete stop to accelerate. It only does it when I am stopped and attempt to drive forward. I checked my driveshaft while in park and can't feel any play. Is this a classic case of U-Joint? Appreciate the help

My u-joints were squeaking in reverse, then started doing it all the time. You can tell if its them usually because when you accelerate, the sound will go quicker and usually fade out. I swapped my original ones out with two greasable u-joints and the squeak is gone.

Yes, a squeak is a classic u-joint noise.

^---Gotta replace mine most likely now. 98 f150, 4.6, 4x4, 157k miles.

Ive searched here and I thought there was a write up on doing U joints but I cant find it. Now, im not sure if i saw that here, or at .net or on another site.

Is there a quick write up on how to replace the U joints floating around here since this topic is so popular.

Unless you have a press and a torch to get some heat to them... it can turn out to be a major PITA. I ended up just taking my driveshaft out and bringing it up to a guy my dad knows.

If you have a Haynes Manual I know they have it in there, along with tons of other things.

I was told by my good friend who's a handy mechanic you want to douse them in PB Blaster or WD40 for a few days before you do this work to loosen all the grime, but that its not a big deal.

Mine were squeaking loudly in reverese... just a little in D. I had them replaced by my mechanic for $165.00. I was going to do it myself, but also herd that it could become a royal PITA, as well.

I just pulled my drive shaft.. This weekend I'm doing my ujoints on a 98 xcab 4x4 auto trans... I have the write up 1/2 way done... I've got it pulled and clips removed tomorrow I will put in the new joints and get the drive shaft back up. If your nervous about it give me a few days to post.

you can also do them in a vice (instead of a press). That's the way I did mine. However mine were very tight. I had to use heat and a 3 foot cheater on the vice handle (bent it good). Even then they didn't break loose until I gave them a "tap" with my hammer :)
