why is my 8.8 destroying 3.55's?
i just got my vin car faxed and found out that the diff ring and pinon and all that was replaced 3 times by the 1st owner and once by me. so this diff has been replaced 4 times in 130,000 miles that doesnt sound right to me... so why is my 97 F-150 4.6L tearing up this 8.8 so much?
car fax says 05/24/2001 45,288 Service Facility Tires rotated and balanced Pinion bearings replaced Differential bearings replaced Differential backlash adjusted Differential ring gear and pinion replaced Differential overhauled Differential replaced Maintenance inspection completed Oil and filter changed chassis lubricated Then the same thing on 12/06/2001 with 53,574 miles and again on 6/27/2002 with 61,211 miles. and then by me sometime in 2005 or 2006. any ideas at all? 3.55 LS 8.8 drums in the rear :confused::confused: |
is it shimed right????

If you're having the same shop fixing it, then they probably don't know what they are doing. Take your truck to a shop that has a good reputation and that has done several repairs on ring and pinions.
|
Did your car fax show a wreck at one time or another? I there any indication of a repair on the rear of the truck? Rear axle could be bent. What were the indications before you replaced it? Noise, grinding, wheel hop, tire repairs?

Interesting...
My differential was rebuilt twice under warranty by my local dealership due to excessive "whining". Neither rebuild eliminated the noise, so after consultation with FoMoCo engineering, the dealership replaced the entire rear axle, except brakes. That did the trick. The replacement was just before 36k miles, and it is still "whine-free" at 154k. FoMoCo engineering theorized that there was probably a casting flaw in the housing that prevented the gears from ever being set up properly...pinion depth if I remember right, but I'm not sure. Hence the two rebuilds with little improvement. |
the 8.8 carrier is weak to begin w/. if i were, i would find a used 9.75 out of a salvage yard equipped w/ 3.55's.

i have read alot of shiftys post...lets say hes very hard on his truck..stupidly hard...and he wonders why things break,,,he needs :help:
|
Sounds like the 1st owner was too. Just the fact his truck runs speaks very well for Ford Tough.

the frist owner replaced the diff 3 times every 10,000 miles i belive it was a ford dealer that did it and yes my truck was in an accident on the car fax in 2003. the Right center pillar had to be fixed. what is the right center pillar? anyone?
yeah i work my truck hard the only reason i blew the 8.8 apart was because i did break torques every day for 7 months and not once did i check the fluid. one night i went to do a break torque and snap broken every thing in there pinon ring gear spider gears everything. it wasnt due to my hauling this is before i did my hauling doing brake torques with no diff fluid blew it up for me! as for going to the 9.75 read my "2wd to 4x4" thread why get a 9.75 when i have a dana 70 in the bed of my truck 1 ton rear springs with 4.56's a free 205 transfer case and a 250 dollar dana 44 with 4.56s :) |
You are dangerous, son.

IF the ring and pinion are set up properly, the only explanation for this would be a damaged 3rd member IE distorted, perhaps a shifted bearing cap or a bad 3rd from the beginning. i dont think tweaked tubes will be enough on their own but may be wrong there.
how about you be less snyde about the 9.75 comment, i for one didnt know either you prick. shut the hell up and put the big axle in it and quit bitchin. |
exactly what i was thinking, klitch... fwiw, the 9.75 is comparable to a Dana 60 in its strength...
