Exclamation Anyone had problems with yukon 4.56's

I got these installed last month, the first set ended up with a bad whine about 40-50. Now I got those replaced and the whine is gone, but it seems to be there in the 50-60 mph range. Im starting to get upset with all of this.

I have never had this much trouble out of this shop. Im thinking of going to 4.88's if they are the same price. Not to mention my battery was dead when I picked it up from them this last time.

I'm no expert on gear's but I think the whining is from the gear's not being installed properly.

Yea it's gotta suck. Atleast they did hold up on their warranty but it's useless if the new one's aren't any better though.

Ill keep taking it back til they get it right. Found out the original owner died, and his son is running it now, it has gone to ****. O well, maybe I can get 4.88's out of the deal.

It sounds like you are the victim of a new mechanic's learning curve. Some shops will say yes to everything, then attempt to do something they have no training or experience in. I've seen it happen before. I go to an honest mechanic. He flat out told me where to go for a gear installation - the same driveline shop he sends his cars to. Of course, this same driveline shop refers engine, tuning, and mods to him; and they both refer work to the same body shop. But at least he'll admit that he can't do it. He could just as easily say yes, then sub-contract the work and mark it up so that he makes a profit for doing nothing.

It is my understanding aftermarket gears will have a SMALL amount of whine. That said I do have a small amount of whine with mine you can only hear if you open the rear window, it is so small once at highway speeds you cant hear it over the '747 airplane' sound of the Mud Tires. I have had my Yukon 4.88's for over a year now with zero problems. My installer had me bring it back at 500 miles (after break in) and again at 3000 miles and he tore it apart, checked them out and replace the fluids free of charge. He and the other 4 guys working there have over 150+ years combined experience in transmissions, gears, rearends, and driveline stuff. In the many years this shop has been open he claims to have only lost one and I'd beleive him, everyone from race cars to lifted trucks swears by the guys.

I had zero noise from the 4.88 gears I had installed in my Sport Trac, so I don't believe additional noise is a given with new gears, but some noise is probably very common as things are turning faster in there than they used to.
I did take it easy for the first 500 miles, and the shop took a look and replaced the oil at 500 miles. I also flushed and put new oil a few thousand miles afterward.
Sounds like your mechanic doesn't know what he's doing, as others said. You were/are his test subject. Check out the state laws, the shop normally has a couple/few times to try and correct it before you can refuse him and sue him for costs (if you wanted to go that far).
