1992 f150, 4x4 disengaging
I have a 1992 f150 4x4 w/the 351 and push button for 4x4 engagement. Going through the snow last week, every 2-300 feet the front end sounded as if it were engaging and disengaging. Don't know if would be a selenoid or shift motor without taking it to a ford dealer. Is this something that I can repair myself?

4x4 sticks.
I have a 1998 Expedition Eddie Bauer 4X4. I put it into 4wheel low and it went right in. When I tried to get it out, it wouldn't come out. I repeatedly played with the dash switch and it eventually came out and back into 2H.
What would cause this? I have not since put it back into 4L. I'd like to be able to use it. What could be the cause(s) for this?

Coincidence, I went through this for the last 2 years with my 97.
You can shift it in and out of 4wd manually by removing the shift motor and turning the shaft as noted earlier in this thread.
After 2 years and two dealers, we found the electronics good and the case binding.
A new/rebuilt tcase fixed it! Probably the reason a lot of these bind.

I am having the same problem as most are mentioning here. I have recently replaced both actuators and solenoid and still having trouble! Had the truck out yesterday and realized it was in 4x4-lights in dash were not lit to tell me so. On the way back home the truck made a horrible noise and now I am stuck in 4L, lights still not lit in dash saying what state it is in. Ive tried the neutral/brake and switch to 4H/2WD and nothing. The front drive shaft is turning telling me that the shift motor has engaged properly. We have taken the vacuum lines off at the actuator and there is a suction. Anyone have any further ideas? The lights in the dash always worked before so im puzzled as to what is happening now.

My 97 f150 is stuck ib 4x4
Saw you mesage string and have the same problem. My 97 was first stuck in 4x4 High and would not go back to 2High. Jacked the fromt end of the truck off the ground and it did not go back to 2 high but did go down to 4x4 Low. removed the transfer motor and manullay switched the transmition to 2 high but could not rotate the transfer motor to 2 high position. Unpluged the motor wiring harnes and still could not rotated the tranfer motor. The dash still indicated the truck is in 4x4 Low even with the switch in 2 High. Should i be able to rotate the transfer motor with a screwdriver in the slot if it is good or is it seized and no good? If the dash still indicated 4x4 Low does this mean that the dash indicator is controled by the position of the transfer motor?
Thanks for you help on the form and i hope that you can give me more information.

Have you had a chance to have this diagnosed by your Ford Dealer? What's the model year and current odometer reading on your F-150?

You wrote: Remove motor from t-case and manually switch it back to 2WD worked for my '97 and never did the same BS again.
I dont quite understand...
Question: Were you able to switch into and out of 4x4 without problems anymore?
Or did you never put it in 4 wheel drive mode again?
