4wd grinding

Thanks for all the great info in the past. However, I am having an issue with my truck going into 4wd. I have shift on the fly & if I am moving at all I get the grinding noise coming form the actuators & 4wd does not engage. If I come to a complete stop it engages fine. I have read alot about the solenoid going bad causing grinding while in 2wd, but not much about when putting it into 4wd. I have no noise while in 2wd only when trying to go to 4wd. It almost seems like the vaccum is not being released fast enough for the actuators to engage quickly. Could that be a possibility? or could the springs in the actuators be weak? I just got the truck a few months ago, so I'm not sure how long it has been doing this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Welcome!!!

im right across the bridge from ya. im not from p berg and i dont drink the water ; )

i would recommend replacing the solenoid valve located behind the battery. that seems to be a common problem. the older ones allowed water in the lines. make sure to get the updated part that has the shield. it costs like 30 beans. 200 if you go to the dealer.

best of luck and keep us posted!!!

Hey Pak, see what another member found with grinding issues. If not the IWE's like MGD mentioned, might want to take a look at the vacuum lines. https://www.f150online.com/forums/5050026-post1.html

there is a video on you tube on how to replace the wheel bearing, if you follow this it makes the following easy

remove the front wheel bearings, clean & lubricate the IWE teeth from the bearing side. it's much easier this way only takes about 20 min per side

it would not hurt to repack the bearing either

check your check valves. a bad check valve, vac leak or solenoid will eat up your iwe s. i ordered 2 new iwe for less than 150 beans.

I was having issues with the intermittent grinding under normal 2wd driving. Then the problem expanded into the 4wd light not coming on when i switched to 4wd. I figured i would start with the cheapest repair being the iwe solenoid. A quick and easy replacement. To my surprise, both problems have gone away. So I would suggest trying the iwe solenoid first.
