4.88's

I just got mine done and WOW what a difference. Not what I expected up front, but im still in the breakin period.

To anyone on the fence over the whole gear mod, GO FOR IT. Next step is to get a performance tuner to really wake the truck.

Its dark now, but I will have pictures tommorow. I got the MagHytec on there too and it looks great!!!!!

In what way(s) is it not what you expected?

tnsilverfx4 Dec 8, 2007 07:50 PM

I expected less RPM's in first gear to get the truck rolling. Not a big deal. Ive only got 20 miles on it. I cant really do much until i break them in. Midrange power is where i feel it the most.

I cant wait to let this loose:thumbsup:

How did it affect your highway mpg's? I want to do gears, but trying to decide between 4.56's or 4.88's for my 35's.

Depends on the backspacing of your wheels. Will you be using stock wheels....if so, which size (18, 20, etc)?

mpresme Dec 10, 2007 09:34 PM

18

my whells are stock 18

Copenhagen848 Dec 10, 2007 09:37 PM

With a 2.5" leveling kit they should fit...you'll more than likely have rubbing at full lock however. There are many on this site that are running 35's on stockers and I believe most report rubbing at full lock.

Cope, I havent hit the highway with it yet. Ive read and heard a million different ways to go about the 500 mile break-in. I'm taking the conservative approach that said keep it under 60 for the first 100 miles. Im currently sitting at 50. I can let you know this weekend.

Ive got 35's and geared for 38's in the future. I hear it gets up there, but I will make sure to post and let everyone know. I had the exact same concern as you. I dont think 38's will be coming til the summer and was worried about my engine screaming on the highway.

Guess I will just be the guinea pig and find out.

When it drops into third gear though, WOW. You can just feel the truck want to take off.

milo99 Dec 11, 2007 12:42 AM

its not as bad a you think. ive been running them for almost a year. no worries, just smiles:drool:

Milo, Nice truck. Glad to hear of the assurance. you moving up in tires in the future or just get them because you want the power?

milo99 Dec 11, 2007 11:13 AM

I got them for more power.:rocker: I am thinking about getting some 37s soon if I can figure out what to do with these. They dont even have 5k on them yet and I wanna get 17s this time. No rush though. I think I will still be at about a 4.60 ratio if I figured it out right. I never was the sharpest tool in the shed though. So that should still leave me pretty good in the sand.

Hey TN, did you get them done at 4WP? If you dont mind what did it run you? I think they told me $1500 front and back.........

Klitch Dec 11, 2007 05:19 PM

just my 2cents on 4.88's

always go easy on it if you have anything over 35"s. i snapped 2 teeth off my pinion, the 3rd was severely fractured, i think the 4.88's may be a little too deep with too few teeth on the pinion for some applications. but then again, maybe i had a flawed set? i dont know. i have a detroit in the rear with 35" allterrains, with a very tired 4.6 up front.
