Does this sound right? Price quote from Randy's Ring/Pinion

I just called up Randy's for a quote on a set of 4.88 gears + master install kit for my 2000 2WD Scab (9.75 rearend). The price for the gears sounded about right, I think it was about 270. The master install kit though was another 250. The guy on the phone said that the 9.75 rearends were so expensive because they had newer tech and bigger parts in them. Does this sound right at all? I had though a Master Install kit would have been under 100.

Generally, the bigger the rearend, the more expensive the install kit. That does still sound a bit pricey though. In my experience with them, RRP has excellent customer service, but their prices are usually not so great. Shop around.

Cashel, give me a call I can get you a better deal on the gears and install kit.
Yukon gears and Timken master install kits

The 9.75s are expensive compared to other 1/2 ton axles, however we have only seen one failed 9.75. Whereas we rebuild about 1 a week of the GM 10 bolts found in the 1/2 GMs.
