Rear End Problem / Spider Gears

Got some quick questions.

Got a 2001 F-150, 355 8.8 rear end.
My spider gears are bad. Everything else seems to look fine.

What kind of work am i looking at to fix this? Do I just replace the spider gears? What kind of Money am i looking at for this type of job?

Thanks

Why did the spider gears fail? Was it a chipped tooth? If so where did the peices go? Did they damage the pinion and ring gear also? Take a closer look at the carrier to be sure it is not cracked. If it is it will need to be replaced too. Pick up a shop manual for detailed instructions and torque specs. Some of the differential sites may also have instructions for you to follow.

Changing the spiders is not too hard.

The spider washers failed on my 2002 last year. It took me about 2 hours to do everything.

The BIG question is what condition is the carrier in?

What kind of work:

put whole rear end on jackstands.
remove rear cover (catch oil)
remove rear wheels.
put truck in neutral.
turn carrier until you can get a 10mm wrench on the pinion bolt, remove bolt.
slide spider pinion out.
push one axle to the inside and remove the axle C clip and remove axle. Repeat for other side.
turn side gears and remove the spider gears.

Find a good HIGH TEMP silicone for the rear cover. Put a good bead on the rear cover and let it stand for 10 +/- minutes before installing.

reverse for the re-install and fill with 85-140 synthetic.

Be safe and have fun!

I have a 02 F150 4.6 liter, and I just replaced the spider gears... I need to know what the torque specs are..because I have a 4.88 gear with a special pin. The only way to pull the spider gears is to pull the chunk and unbolt the ring gear to slide out the axel pin and I dont know what to torque the ring bolds and the chunk barring bolts.
