Rear Differential identification

Hello, I am considering a Mag-Hytec rear diff cover for my 05 FX4 with 3.73 limited slip. However, I can't seem to figure out which rear differential I have to purchase the correct one. My axle code is: B6. Tag on differential says: V953 R L73 9 75 5E03.

Here is a picture of my diff:

Here is a link to Mag-Hytech diff covers (scroll down on page to get to the Ford's):

http://www.maghytec.com/index.asp?Pa...ATS&Category=4

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Thanks Lumadar, I was thinking the Ford 12-9.75 was correct also but wanted to be sure. I got confused when I looked at the Mag-Hytec web site and thought the Ford 12-10.25 looked closer to the correct one. Anyways, thanks again for your reply.

To expound on this a little, here's how to decode that toe tag.

V953R - This is the factory order code for your axle assembly. If for whatever reason a dealership wanted to order a complete axle for your truck, they'd use this number.

L73 - I think you missed a 3, this should read "3L73," indicating a limited slip differential (the "L"), with a 3.73 gear ratio.

975 - This is the ring gear diameter itself, and the identification for the axle. "975" is a 9.75" axle, "88" is an 8.8" axle, and so on.

5E03 - I'm not sure what this means, I think this is a designator for what plant the axle was built at.

Quintin, thanks for the detailed explanation of the toe tag info! Now I know which diff cover to buy.

No tag on axle

I need to change the rear differential on my 99 f150 4.6l.Teeth busted.
The code on the door is H9 which I believe is 8.8 axle and 3.55 gears.
But the junk yard wants the s# off the tag from the axle .
Since the tag is gone I do not know what that #is.
Is there another place I can look for that info?

s#? I also have an H9. Limited slip 8.8" 3.55 ratio. I could take a pic of mine but I dont think it will make a difference.

Thanks ParnAZ but what I need is the # that is on the tag that is attached to the
rear differential. It will be something like S8629a ...S8659b ....etc.
If you could tell me what your # is that might help.

Seems to me it's a 3.55 8.8" open rear end...

You can also look at your door jamb tag and get the "AXLE" code and then Google it and you'll have all the info you need..

Good luck!

Blowing my wheel baring and seal

Ok i askes what my gear ratio was bc on the passanger side i keep blowing my wheel bearing and seal with in 100 miles for haveing them put back in... It started bc my aunt had a tire that was too big on it and drove it around for awhile then when she put the right size tire back on it started blowing.... What should i replace first or should i get a whole new rear end? But its only doing it on the passanger side... Thanks

Check the vent tube to make sure it's venting the rear diff. If it is plugged, pressue will build up in the diff and axle housing. That wouldn't explain the bearing failure though. If the axle bearing is bad, you probably should replace the axle too since the axle is the bearing surface.
