Won't go in 4WD

Hi, I just purchased a 1995 f150 and I can not get it to go in 4wd low. Does anyone know how this work? This is probally a stupid question but I can not figure it out. It says on the shifter to "push down" ??? I had the truck in "park" when I was trying to do this. Can anyone explaine it to me?
Thanks.

I have heard most instruction manuals tell you to put it in neutral before shifting into 4-lo. I would try that before doing anything else.

Yeah I got a 95 back in october and my 4wd worked fine when i got it. I pulled to trucks out in 4wd low and no problems, but about a while after that Mine wouldn't go into 4wd low anymore. Ive heard that to about putting it into neutral also, but either park or neutral work, but my 4wd high still works, but i need to get my low working again. I got 35 inch tires, and i gotta pull a bout this weekend and dont wanna mess up my rebuilt transmission. I have heard that over time these trucks quick going into 4wd. My guess would be there is a bushing wore out. That would be the cheapest fix anyways.

In neutral, foot on the brake to go from high to low.

good im not the only one

its funny yal mention this..becuase this has just happened to me...it worked fine for the winter but then all of a sudden wouldnt work...so i asked a buddy at the dealership and he said that this is fairly common..and what it is ..is the linkage..he said to take it all apart and clean and lube it up..so i have yet to try this..i think ill do it this weekend..but if it works out...ill make sure to tell you .........

put it in nuetral (transmission) , pull the shifter straight back to 4 hi, then push the gear shifter straight down like you are going to push to through the floor board (it should go down 1/2" to 3/4") then give it a quick firm pull into 4 lo trying to skip nuetral.

For anyone else with problems look under the truck and let someone push down on the gear shifter and see if the shifter clears the notch to let it come back to the 4 lo position. YOu will see what I mean when you crawl under there.

93F150 is right. Sounds like the linkage just isn't lining up. In the 93 that I had, when it would start grind, I just shut the truck off, then put it in the gear that I wanted, 4-hi or 4-low, then would start the truck back up. I had some problems with my 99 as well, just needed greased. Hope this helps.
