How to identify gear ratio in my truck
I recently bought a 1997 4.2L V6 4X2 F-150 XL Reg Cab Short Bed with a 5 spd. manual tranny. How can I find out whether this truck has a 3.08 or 3.55 rear end??????

Look at one of the tags on the diff cover. It will have a number like 3L55 for 3.55:1 Limited Slip or 308 for 3.08:1 Open(not limited slip). For other info do a search for other posts.
------------------ 97 F150 XLT SuperCab 4.6L 2WD, 3.55 L.S., CD changer, Airaid FIPK, White w/red and blue custom pen striping. |
Look here.
https://www.f150online.com/f150board...ML/000225.html ------------------ 97 F-150 SC Lariat, Styleside, White over Gold, 4.6L (Windsor), Automatic, 3.55 rear end, electronic 4X4, w/ every option of Lariat and ORP packages except the 17" wheels (I even got the OR decals now!), MOD's so far: K&N air box mod, Gibson Super Truck, clear Bugflector II, Leer TSC 600 hard cover, Bridgestone Dueler OWL ATP 265/75 R-16's, TrailMaster Invader N7 shocks, Smittybilt step bars, Ford moulded mud guards, "White-white" head lamps, Cloud Rider Design's SS Grill and bumper opening "Summer Grill's", Bosch platinum + 4's. |
One other option is to jack up the rear of the truck. Put a mark on the inside of one of the rear tires and one on the drive shaft. Rotate the tire one complete revolution and watch how many times the drive shaft goes around. So if it's just a bit more than 3 times your gear set is 3.08 and if it's about 3 and a half times, you have 3.55's

Hello- You will have to find the ratio manually. The easiest way is to pull the cover and count the teeth on the ring gear and the pinion gear. Put a dab of white paint or white-out on the first tooth so that you don't loose your place when turning it. Once you get your two numbers, divide your ring teeth by the pinion teeth.
