Question One more question (Amps, Ohms and wiring)

I have two MTX subs rated @ 4 ohms each. I was thinking of getting a Fostgate amp that's 400x2 @ 2 ohms and 800x1 @ 4 ohms bridged. If I've done my math right, I can't bridge the subs because they'd be at 2 ohms and bad stuff would happen. Am I right?

I really want to bridge them because that'll give me more power, or would it?

If I can't bridge them with that amp, what are the best amps to buy that that I could bridge at 2 ohms or less?

Thanks.

All your questions, and then some, can be answered here:

Take your time and look around. Lots of calculators for you to use.

Wow, that's a lot of info.

Lemme ask a different question. The 2 subs are 400w each and the amp is an 800x1, 400x2. Would it be better to bridge them or not? Wouldn't I get 400w for each sub either way?

Let me ask YOU a question, lil' bro'. Are you going to wire them in series or parallel? And here's a couple more good sites for you:

(check tech section)

If you wire the subs in parallel, you will be giving the amp a 2ohm load. Not good if you are bridging the amp. 2ohm mono (bridged) is the same load as 1ohm stereo. the RF amp can't take that kind of abuse for long.
Is another amp and option? if so, check out the MTX or RF class d amps. these will allow the 2 ohm load you are looking for and absolutely POUND the subs! the MTX 6500d is rated for 250w@4ohm x1 and 500w@2ohm x1, but most people are getting more around 775w@2ohm. There are other amps available too. JBL BP series are good and can also handle 1ohm loads

Thanks, Isaiah. So I guess that leaves me with two options:

I could wire the two 400w subs in series, or I could get this Fosgate bd1000.2 amp which is 1000x1 @ 2 ohms. Would that work?

I think that amp would actually be a bit much for the MTX subs. It can be underrated and does closer to 1100+. If you want to stay with RF for the amp look at the 500.
If I am right you have MTX 8000 series subs. If so the MTX 6500D is great.

If your subs are 4 ohm subs and you have an amp that is rated at 400 watts per channel at 2 ohm load, I would simply put one sub on each channel. Granted the amp will not actually push 400 watts per channel at a 4 ohm load, but this will actully be better and safer for the amp. Always remember the impediance listed for an amp is always a minumum, and you can always go higher with no fear of damaging the amp.

If your subs are MTX, & are rated @ 400 W max load, they are 6000 series subs. You can buy new 8 ohm 6000 series subs to parallell & use a 4 ohm bridged amp a lot cheaper than going for a class D amp. If you're going to use the 4 ohm subs you'll have to get an amp rated to 2 ohms stable to parallel the subs. Kicker has a 600.1 that's stable to 2 ohms mono, as well as many of the others mentioned. What kind of enclosure are you going to use? Where are you going to mount a Class D 1000 W amp? I have a Class D Kicker 600.1 under the passenger seat & had to leave the outer cover off for it to fit.
