what direction your subs are facing is not that critical. It might make a small difference.....
But what's vastley more important, is if the cubic footage of your enclosure, is optimum for the subs your going to be using. And BTW, if you talk to the sub manufacturer (which I'd recommend you should) don't ask them, "how small a space will these subs work in"..... instead, ask them, "what would be the 'optimum' cubic footage for these subs". If you don't have the space to run the subs optimumly, go with fewer, or smaller subs.
Most anybody with sub enclosure experience will tell you, a couple of 8"s with the optimum space will sound WAAAY better, than a couple of 12"s starved for space. Of course a couple 12"s or 15"s with the optimum space required will be better yet ;-)
