Eclipse AVN5435 & Eclipse-Specific SWIX

I'm having problems...

My steering wheel controls, which have previously been flawless with my AVN5435/SWIX combo, are now only intermittently working.

I'm going to go 'in there' this weekend but, I thought I'd post up before I started to see if anyone had any thoughts on places to start, things to check, and to see if anyone else has had similar problems.

Being that it's intermittent, I keep thinking that one of the butt connectors that I used to connect everything togteher has wiggled loose or has corroded.

How can I test wiring and such on something like this?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

RP... sure it's just not dirt/misaimed sending eye?

It's funny you posted this now..
We both got our AVN5435's around the same time (I used the SWI-ECL)...and now you need to work on your setup... and I JUST FINISHED () putting the old setup into my 2009 F250!
My SWI still works fine after a reprogramming.

Ford is making things more difficult now with the can-bus system...even the illumination wire is through the network...the speed sensor is through the network...the steering wheel controls need more attention.

She's all working now though, after a lot of net searching.

Hope you find your trouble.
Quit using butt connectors>>> solder

Yeah... I'm betting it's the connectors. I didn't get in there this weekend but, it's pretty much not working at all now. I'll update once I get in there and tweak around...

As an update... it's working perfectly well now. I did *nothing* to fix it. I'm betting it's a loose connector and I'll be back in the same boat soon.

Hopefully it's just a loose connector and it happened to have fixed itself. I'd be worried it's a pinched wire that finally wore through its insulation. Knock on wood, I've never had any problems with mine in my F150 with an AVN 5510.

I used to have one of the IR transmitter adaptors hooked up to an AVN2454 in my old Mountaineer. The IR LED was constantly falling backwards through the hole. It was a PITA. I eventually just kept a bottle of superglue in my center console.

Well... it's back to non-functional.

The problem with this is that I don't remember how this thing worked. I remember researching the heck out of it before I put it in and it worked with no problems but, now that I've slept a day or three, I don't even remember how it works...

To my recollection, didn't this thing just plug in after splicing a couple of the wires out of the stock harness?

Thanks, guys. I'm hoping that I don't have to reprogram it. I really feel strongly that it's just a poor connection. It intermittently worked on the way home from work tonight...

I'm going to go give it an hour right now (ie: pull the head unit and chase wires to see that everything is together).

Ground wire was loose... It was the first thing that I checked. I gave it a tiny tug and, poof, it came right out of the splice connector (I know..... I know.... solder, solder, solder).

The good thing is that all is well in the Eclipse world again...

Good find RP....
All should be better in my Eclipse world if I win the ebay auction for the Sirius tuner module...in another hour.
I hope you aren't one of the other bidders!

So... did you win it?

...btw, it quit working again during my Thanksgiving driving... then it worked again.

So, now I'm left with the quandary of trying to figure out WHAT ELSE is loose. Any chance in hell of my steering wheel controls being 'worn' out? Has anyone heard of these things going bad?

Through some "uncautious" bidding. I've ended up with two. Since one of them was only $5, I'm ok with that... maybe one might not work.
I haven't got them yet.

If it turns out both work, are you interested in one?

I was also thinking your steering control buttons might be getting a little funky.
Did you try a full reprogram of the SWI?

I was just looking at the workshop manual for my F250, and one of the problems (must be common) with the steering controls is a stuck button....??
Then they have proceedures to check for proper resistance values of the switches...and some other tests

I have a 2004+ F150 Ford workshop manual on disc....do you want it??

Really, have you checked all the wiring, made me a mod, Checked the position of the LED, etc? I would be surprised to hear that a button/resistor wore out on the SWC.

okay, seriously had to just throw that in there...

Sorry guys.... forgot to drop back in on this one...

It's still intermittent. I'm going to crack back in to it again tomorrow. Thanks for the offer on the CD; I actually have one as well. I think I may just pull it all the way out and wire it back in with a full reprogram. It's made it nearly 3.5 years...
