Backup Camera Installation

Hi everyone,

I have purchased a backup camera that mounts on the license plate - mounts at the top of the plate using the factory plate holes. It's a Boyo brand, but have a few questions for those that have already installed one:

1. How did you run your wire to get inside the cab? I will be hooking my into a Pioneer AVH P6800. Just wondering what the best method and routing is.

2. Did you use the black plastic wire loom to protect against the elements?

3. Anyone use this type/brand of camera?

I appreciate any input. I hope I placed this thread into the right forum. Just trying to make sure I have everyhting I need before this weekend.

Prost!

1. I ran my wires from the head unit down the passenger side of my truck. then if you open the rear passenger door there is a plastic piece that sits on the floor under the door when it's closed (I can't remember what it's called, door sill maybe?) take that off and there is a groment (sp?) that you can cut and then run your wires out and under the cab through that. I can't remember where I went from there.

2. I didn't use any wire loom. But I should have cause my wires have gotten loose and are staring to hang a little. The loom would help keep that from happening and have it look like a stock wire harness. I am planning on going back and adding that when I install my new head unit. (other one was stolen)

3. I didn't. Can't help you there.

1) I have the xl... but I ran my wires into the cab from a vent with a rubber flap on the rear wall of the cab, then just ran it up to the HU via the door sil.. but recently I re-ran everything in my truck up the middle.. as far as the outside, I ran the wire along my frame and zip-tied it to whatever is sturdy!

2) I used loom only on the places that looked like it was going to be rubbing, but I would loom it all if I did it again.

3)nope

Good luck with the install!

I am in the Mannheim/Heidelberg area. Appreciate the comment on the truck. I keep her as clean as I can, but can only get so much done. I have to buy my detail supplies on-line and finding companies that will ship to me is almost nill. There are "detail" shops on the German economy, but they tend to charge way too much. I have 6 more months and this guy is heading back to the States. On the plus side, the Germans will tend to move the heck out my way - streets are very narrow here.....well you know...you've been here.

Camera Update

OK, I got the camera installed this afternoon. I must say it took me several hours, but I used plastic loom and zip ties and hid under the frame. Anyway, I went to hook it to my Pioneer AVH-P6800DVD. I attempted to hook it to the back up camera RCA, but could never get a picture. I hook it to the AV1 inout and got a pic right away. It seems the HU uses a violet wire to sense when the vehicle drops into reverse. Does anyone know what/location is used to hook into? I'd much rather have it automatically come on when I shift the beast into reverse rather than having to pull it up each time.

Thanks for the help!

I grabbed the power from the back up light, I tested the harness to find it coming from the light at the back, it is also inside th cab, it is black/pink in the driver's kick, on a gray plug pin 13

So are these hard to instal? I got one in the mail for my Kenwood DNX-7100(also in the mail). I thought the instal would just be plug and play? Any tips on the instal would be great. By the way the camera I got is a boyo.

What model Boyo did you get? I installed the Boyo VLT400 (the VLT part may not be correct). It's not the whole license plate frame - the camera I have stretches across the top of the plate and mounts using the exisitng plate bolt holes. The installation is pretty easy - I took my time and ran the wire inside some plastic loom from the rear plate to the grommet at the right passenger door. I did lower the spare tire to make it easier to move around. I then zip tied the loom to the frame. Once to the rear door, I drilled a small hole inside the center of the grommet and pushed the wire through. Since the hole was small, the rubber sort of seals again around the wire. Then I ran the wire up the door sill and up to the radio.

The camera isn't too bad at all. I wasn't expecting too much, but it's surprised me. I got mine off eBay for about $85, so a good deal.

Go ahead and install it - you'll like the results!

Appreciate the info! After I saw the length of wire Pioneer provides, I was dreading having to run it back to the rear light.

I'll tap the wire where you mentioned. Good stuff! Thanks again.

I got the VTL420. It think its the same as yours except mine is black.

When you shift your truck into reverse does it automaticaly switch to the back up camera? If so, this is how I want mine hooked up and any tips on how to do that would be great.

Thanks

Recon, I have my back up camera coming out of the middle of my license plate. It looks similars to your camera with night vision. My question is, what do you do for dirt? I have to pretty much wipe mine down everytime I get out if I want to use it next time I back up. In rain, I don't even try to use it.
