Nav. Newbie

O.K, Im looking into an in dash dvd/nav. not sure wich one just yet, but what I am wondering is how the nav. part works?
its gotta be more that just a cd/dvd you put in, Im thinkin maybe a "brain box" and some kind of antenna? The units I have been looking at all say nav. but I just dont get it! Seems like there would have to be some kind of antenna, or location device right??
any info would be great!! pics would be even better!
thanks for helping out an "old school" "kraco" guy....lol

A brief explanation

There are a couple different ways they do it for built in units. There are ones that have the maps on DVD. There are ones that are hard drive based. The DVD ones are a lot less expensive. The drawback can be less data and having to change disks depending on region. Some head units have an add on unit available to add nav ability. They all use an external antenna. Prices for a unit with nav built in can range from $1500 to $2400. Good GPS has gotten so minuturized that the brains easily fit into the head unit. I have an external GPS (Garmin Nuvi 350) that has a hard drive and is just a little bigger than a deck of cards.

Here's a link to one of the most anticipated ones coming out this month or next.

Hope that helps. I'm better with gadgets than trucks.

There are a lot of choices out there right now. With your dash layout you have the ability to put in all of them. One of the biggest things to start with is, do you want it to fit flush and look factory then go with a double din style, or if you like the flipout screen style then single din would be the way. If you don't have specific requirements, than this may be where to start. Remember you have to look at this every time your in the truck.

My preference is the eclipse, you have several choices from them on that.
avn-5435 '05-current model dvd nav(1 disc whole country)
avn-5500 new 06 model replacing 5435, with new street level graphics/mapping (shows buildings etc.) and ipod interface capability.
avn-6600 new 06 model arriving at dealers in april all of 5500 features + dual dvd/cd slots for simultaneous nav and dvd play
avn-5495 '05-current model hard drive nav(no dvd neccesary) and 20gig hard drive music storage as well as memory stick input. The radio I have in my truck.

Actually I don't know anything about that brand. I've dealt with eclipse, alpine, rockford, pioneer, panasonic, sanyo, kenwood, clarion, and coustic but not that one, sorry.

Yes the jensen will fit if its a normal double din, I can't see why it wouldn't be since most companies are developing products to fit the surge of doubledin dashes on most of the new cars. I don't have many thoughts on jensen because of their poor history of unreliable products.
