installing 2 degree shims???
I have a question about installing 2 degree shims. It appears to be pretty straight forward, but i don't want to assume anything when lifting rear end up. Anyone with advice would be greatly appreciated. Happy Holidays to All, Greg
It's easy. Put the frame on jackstands, use the jack underneath the rearend and jack up slighty to relieve the pressure on the springs. Take the nuts off the u bolts and slowly let the jack down. Once the shims are in, jack the rearend back up and put the u bolts back in. Piece of cake.
You may want to check the bottom of your springs for an existing 2 degree shim. Use the previous procedure described, but loosen the center pin with a wrench and vice-grip and rotate the shim in the opposite direction and just tighten everything back up. It would help if you buy a cheap angle finder for 10.00 at homedepot and measure your pinion and driveshat angles before you change anything. Good Luck...
there is no previous shim installed. i haven't measured angle, but it is very close to 0 degrees. there was a great thread a week or so ago, that is where i got the idea. it talked about pinion angle , and the nose is for sure not pointing down. i thought the 2 " shackles would help launching, but i think only when you install the shims with the shackles is when it helps. if i was sent shims with shackles i must have over looked them, but i was able to find some Friday. thanks richo
If you haven't measured the angle, you won't know what it is. But, if it was close to 0 degrees, the easiest way to tell without measuring is checking the u-joints - they'll be messed up. They won't rotate at 0 degrees and the wear will be in one area.
