no chip, 6lb'er & everything ok.

I just installed my 90mmMAF, 6lb chip, crankcase breather, cold air box. I am still waiting for my flip chip (couple more days).

I took my truck for a trip down the road and it ran fine. Even when I got on it, no engine noise (other than normal). I don't think I *need* a chip. Not to say that I don't plan on using one, I do. I just think that at my elevation (UT 5000FT) the engine runs okay with stock program. I'm sure I'll get more power but I watched my guages tonight and everything is ok.

It made 11lbs boost, AF guage showed everything was fine, and all temps were normal. (I have a friend w/a 6lber who only gets 10lbs up here w/his L).

Anyone ever hear/seen this w/no chip?

BTW that is an autometer boost guage (so it is correct).

What kind of boost were you seeing before the 6? I think I would get an a/f reading on your engine before you do any serious flogging..

SVTMoonshine Aug 26, 2002 12:45 AM

I was getting 7lbs (MAX) with stock pulley.

My af is just about the same, just a touch lower. But maybe I'll take it for a quick dyno run to see how she's doing.

Agreed.....costly mistake if it's running lean.....I would wait before even thinking about running the truck hard with a 6#...two weeks could cost you a few G'$

You have to be running leaner......You added a 90MM MAF and a 6lber with your stock fuel curve program. Be careful my friend, you are threading on thin ice! Please that it to an engine dyno that plots A/F ratios before you do anymore driving;)

Be careful and take it easy until you get your chip. Your next post may be about a blown engine.

Are you running stock plugs?

superfords Aug 26, 2002 07:01 AM

yeah well, I had a 6lber on already and added the 1.5 upper and thought I'd "wait for my chip" and "drive it nice".

I already had a chip but didn't want to take the time to send it in for a reburn since I was waiting for the new Diablo delta flip chips to come out at the time anyway.

So I drove my truck like that and melted the electrodes off of my spark plugs. take a look at #2 plug in the picture. again, I had only added 1.5, you've added 6!

be safer than sorry, it could have melted a piston instead.

just my .02

good luck,
chris

Do you have a wideband meter in your truck? If you are using a meter tapped into the stock O2's, then you're getting poor info. Very risky.

Sorry Gator but I tend to disagree...here's why.......
When he gets his chip (no matter what program he gets) it will be leaner and have more timing than the stock program. That is why the chip makes our trucks feel like friggin beasts.

I think running a pulley on the stock program is the safest way to go ;) I ran a 4# lower for a month in the March (still 30* in MI) before my chip was sent to me, and had plenty of WOT blasts.

I WILL admit that a plug change is a must for that much boost over stock ;)

Ugh, no way!! 6 # on a stock ecu and you feel this is a safer route?

I wish i had my A/F's #'s to show you just running a file from Diablo that wasnt even tuned to my truck! I was lean, UNSAFE Lean! It was hardly safe and that was with stock boost.

A reprogrammed chip does more then add timing. It can back timing down in certain RPM's, raise them in other RPM's. You pay close attention to A/F#'s before screwing around with timing. Its like a ticking time bomb!

I wouldnt even bother with a chip from any vendor unless YOU supply them with your A/F's from a local Dyno. That is the SAFEST way to do it.

I would really hate to log on tomorrow morning and see you starting a post about scattering your engine.

Joe,
I got your back;) I am with Joe on this one unless you guys have more than 95 dyno runs with air-fuel readings like i have with every size pulley from a 2,4,5 and a 6# with a chip and without a chip i have NEVER had my airfuel over 12.0 even with the 6# on with no chip,i have had alot more concerns with reburns from tuners that were well into the 12.5-13.0 range even after telling them your mods you have. I am in no way saying you should not run a chip, just saying get a custom tune from your tuner that you can see with your own eyes where the air-fuel is set up properly.

I have a chip.......I was in no way saying not to get a chip, I was trying to make a point that you don't need a chip (or even worse a reburn) as much as people think.

Hell some people ask if they need a reburn for drop shackles

Thanks Matt ;)

Well that was your problem......it wasn't tuned to your truck......I'll bet the stock program would have yielded lower A/F readings ;)

Well i wouldnt be driving around without a chip just for the fact of the 90mm maf. Yes a truck that had the 80mm stock can run and even drive around with the 90. But you keep doing WOT blasts with the PCM set to 80mm and running a 90 you will get stuck trust me. Its the same thing as why you have to modify the Airraid box if you are running a 90mm. Another way you can tell if you are running lean is by looking at your tips. If they arent the usual Black that they are then the truck is running lean. When i was having my problems and the PCM had a bad ground and was causing my a/f and everything to get messed up my tips were clean not the usual black that they are. Even stock these trucks run rich and thats what black tips mean. So rich is good and lean is bad.
