Unhappy Another blown motor......

Well my friend "spanky777will" blew his engine a couple weeks ago. Really sucks because I was planning on doing a pulley next but, might just not anymore. Don't want my engine to go, not sure if it was the pulley or not though. His mods are as follows,
*JDM intake
*90maf upgrade
*JDM Boost-by-pass
*Crank case filter
*JDM 4 pound pulley
*JDM flip chip
*dual magnaflows 14416's
*Rancho traction bars
*deep sump trans.pan
*NGK TR5's

That's gotta suck big time. What happened exactly, was he at the track? Was he flooring it or was he just crusing around?

3 blown plugs, rods knocking, bent valves, and oil in numbers 3,4,and 6 cylinders

Hey,

That really sucks.

When the engine blew, He was running a JDM chip tuned by JJ's SVT right? It can happen to any of the tuners customers, not just any certain one tuners chip.

I thought JDM was tuning all his chips to run richer to protect the engine? Hopefully the chip was tuned for all that nice? I got a JL chip with a 5 Lb lower and Upper. So far so good.

Was it a 01 L?

Its a 99L,
I don't know who buned it for him, think JDM but, it was burned for a 4 pounder. I currently have my chip buned by JJ , no problems.

Another blown motor with less than 5K miles on it with mods. Backs up the 5K rule. Most that have blown up have done it in the first 5000 miles after mods.... Just FYI

I did a post awhile back and thats what I found to be ther truest statment I could make. All of the trucks that have let loose usually do it in the first 5K of mod life....

wow

I almost bought my mods off of him, when he was selling LFP products opted to buy directly from mark instead, wonder why he did not have any LFP products on his truck ,or am i mistaking him with someone else? =spanky777
In any case a blown motor is the pitts, wonder what exactly caused it?

I have all those mods but 63K miles. Jim just retuned mine and the exhaust is really black. I think it runs more consistant if it is leaner so since I'm a bracket racer I just sent it back and told Jim to lean it out and up the timing. If its gonna blow I need a refresh anyway. Life on the edge, go for the gusto, I already got my money's worth out of this motor anyway.

The only difference I see between his and mine is I run TR-6s gapped at .044 and you are running tr-5s probably gapped at .040. Isn't the tr-5 a hotter plug? It would be nice if we could see all 8 plugs.

I change my plugs at 15K. .044 gap works fine and I believe produces more hp and better gas mileage. I resently installed 8 new coil paks with the last plug change. Truck ran .1 quicker in the 1/8. Old plugs only had 15k on them and looked great but were starting to round on the edges of the point and electrode.

I do remember reading somewhere that tr-6's are recommended for 4lb+ pulleys b/c they do run cooler.

I've been running tr-5's gapped at I think .041 for over 1k miles now and it's fine, but I only have a 2lb lower pulley.

If you melt some plugs, thats in your tune. Melting plugs come from pinging. If thats the case it was not a weak motor, but it was a bad tune...
