4.10 gears

I have just purchased a 1999 Lightning. It has an Air Raid intake
and as far as I know is otherwise stock. I would like to know where you guys get 4.10 ring and pinions. My local Ford dealer says only stock 3.55 or 3.73 are available from Ford.

Check out www.lightningforceperformance.com or www.teamjdm.com . Both of those sites sell 4.10 gears.

Question

Any negative effects from the 4.10 gears on the truck, and do you need a chip to run them?

Lots of negatives w/ 4.10s

All you ever get is tire smoke and neck breaking acceleration with 4.10s (j/k)

I love mine and you do need a chip to compensate the shift points and speedo otherwise it'll say you're doing 70 but you're really doing like 50 or so. Just make sure if you get non ford gears that your machine shop shims them right or they will howl if too loose or eat itself if too tight.

btw, when you go from 3.55 to the 4.10s there is an extreme difference in acceleration.

What about 3.73 to 4.10? Hey Darryl, I have a detroit locker in my 65 mustang and it makes mad wurbling noises on decelleration, is that normal? (I thought it was for Detroit Lockers)

you'll feel a difference going from 3.73 to 4.10 but not as much as the 3.55 to 4.10. If I already had 3.73 gears I would probably keep it the same though. My 3.55 gears were too wimpy for my truck. Most say that the 3.73s are the best for our trucks but I've never had them so I'll stick with mine.

Detroit lockers are naturally really loud so the noise you are hearing is probably normal.

I don't have an L but want to get 3.73s in my truck. I've got highway gears now

I'm in New Orleans. You know a good place to get it done down here?

And how much does it usually cost including parts and labor?

May be beside the point......

but, if you have/had 3.73 gears installed and you run 16" wheels(M/T ET Streets for example), you have an effective rear end ratio of 4.09 .....if you're into racin'
