It's Time For My First Oil Change. Help!
 

I've been putting it off due to the marbles in the can thing but now it's past time and I have to make a decision. My truck sounds perfect now and I sure don't want the marbles rolling around.

What do you guys recommend? I have 2800 miles on the factory oil. It HAS to come out today.:confused:

My vote is M1 10W30

Amsoil 5W-20.

Actually, I normally do a 1K mile change on a new motor with good natural oil, then change to Amsoil at 3-4K. Lets the bearings wear in and everything else in the engine break in as well, before going to the much lower friction of a full synthetic oil. The 1K change is to remove any of the initial bearing or other machining metal flakes of a fresh engine.

Amsoil is 100% synthetic. M1 is not, regardless of their claims. The Motorcraft filters are highly rated as well, avoid Fram at all costs.

For what it's worth... the marble sound comes and goes... most noticable after you change the oil... do like most of the others and put in what you desire... I've used stock, Motorcraft 5w20 syn blend and Royal Purple 5w30 (current choice)...

Fill the new filter with oil before putting it on and for extra safety... hold the throttle to the floor while turning it over after you've put new oil/filter in. This puts the engine into start bypass and it will turnover but not start allowing your oil pump to lube the motor before starting it...

I've do it all and still heard the marbles... it went away or it's not loud enough for me to hear it anymore...

M1 5W-30 gives you excellent lubrication especially at start up and delivers peak horsepower. You can go heavier under severe operation and extreme heat if you need to. I had some knocking in the engine at start up ( slight- piston slap??) switched to Mobil and its gone.

My Thunderbird SC has 400K on original engine and runs on it exclusively and never burns a drop. I'm sold!:D

Note: Ford went to 5W20 in a desperate move to improve average fuel economy. The engines haven't changed and most experts that long term the lighter oil could affect longetivity especially in hot supercharged engines.

As a previous poster indicated Amzoil is also excellent. As for filters if you change often 2500-3000 miles, most do an adequate job.

Prime the filter before you spin it on.

I changed mine at 1800 miles to Castrol 10-30 synthetic. I now have 4000, mostly to and at the dragstrip, and have not
heard the "marbles" everyone speaks of. Oh yea, I use the
FRAM PH2 filter. Maybe I am lucky, who knows?

I would do a regulaer 5W-30. This has gave me the best results. I went to synthetic to early and got a puff of smoke while is was in. Finally at 12K it is going away! Use 5W-30!!!

After reading the answers to this thread and the other thread that was started yesterday, I believe I'll use Mobil 1 /5W-30.

Do you guys recommend a Mobil 1 filter?

I'd stick with he Motorcraft FL-820S at least until your warranty is gone. One less point Ford could raise if the engine ever expired.

chickenears, i just changed my oil first time four days ago,,, used stock oil (motorcraft 5w20 premium synth) used stock oil filter as well. Primed oil filter with 1/2 quart of oil and primed gasket on the filter as well. After this there was no n oticable noise at all and truck has been running great ever since. I do think stock oil/filter is the best way to go at least for the first 10,000 miles. No problems whatsoever with the change,, changed oil at 3,200 miles.

did you get stock oil and filter at dealer and do it yourself or did you have it done at dealer. thanks.
