Question 2003+ Lightning

Anyone know anything about plans for 2003 or newer Lightnings? I love the current one, but I want to wait and see what they come out with next year as I would really like a supercab version. The competition is going to be strong next year with the new Dodge, also, so I'd imagine they are going to beef the Lightning up even more if they continue production. If anyone has any info or links, I'd appreciate it! Happy Motoring!

I don't forsee ford making a supercab Lightning, but if you want something almost as good, the new 02 Harley Davidson F150 has pretty much the L drivetrain with 340hp and is an extended cab. Comes with some nice 20's stock too.

As for the Lightning, I really feel in my heart that ford is going to put on some 4v heads for the 03 year. With that being said, if they do this, I would expect the new 03 L's to be ungodly pickup trucks!!!

Wink

Yeah, I read about the Harley truck with the 240 horse...that's a quad cab though and I have no harley Davidson so I really am not interested in driving that truck...although I like Harleys, I think it would be kind of poser. Thanks for the info, though, and hopefully Ford will do the new 4v heads!

So far

all I've seen on this topic has been SPECULATION on the 2003 Lightning. No one even knows if Ford will produce a 2003 L.

You might try calling SVT (1-800-fordsvt) and ask them. I have called them several times and if you get the right person, you just might get a scoop for us here. The one time I called them, I got a guy who confirmed that they would produce a True Blue in 2002. Give it a shot and let us know what you found out!

The original projection was a 6 year run on them. As long as they sell they will more than likely be built. The '03 5.4L is scheduled to get 3 valve heads and it would seem they are on schedule for that modification. They will also be putting a beefier trans behind it.

I dont think that there is a lightning coming out in 03. Ford just recently closed a few plants and one of them was the plant in Canada where our trucks were built. So i dont know where they are gonna be made now but im guessing and im hoping that Ford will wait until 04 or whenever it happens for the body change and Gen 3 lightning. I wish they never made them in 02. Should have kept the build years to 3 like they did with the Gen 1's to keep that feeling of being limited edition. And with the harleys getting our trucks motors and drivetrain that feeling gets even lessened. I hope that Ford doesnt build anymore lightnings until the Gen 3's with the new body style and the 4 valve heads. Also Ford if you are reading this we need Yellow as the new color and chrome rims.

Actually the original projection was for 24,000 units supposedly spread out over 6 years. Since they upped the production runs though here is what you have:

1999: 4500
2000: 5000
2001: 7500
2002: 7500

That adds up to 24,500. Give or take a hundred on each year and you basically come out to the original 24,000. If there is a 2003 L I don't think it will have the current engine in it. It's also pretty well known at this point that the redesign has been pushed back to 2004, so I'm not sure of the 03's are going to have the 3 valve heads or not. Just my two pennies.

Just figured I bring this back up. I guess all the speculation (3 valve, extended cab, No 03's) were a little off, huh.

As long as they put threads in the head and use
stronger rods, I'll buy another one as long as
this one stays in one piece a while.

You had me confused there for a second Vinnie. I couldn't understand why all these posters were speculating on what the 03 might have and if they were going to even build one. It is kind of fun to bring up old stuff like that and see how close to the mark some people were and also how much info on this board can sometimes be just speculation and have very little factual basis. Reading this was kind of like looking in a reverse crystal ball.
