How do you feel detonation?

With all this talk of detonation, I wanna know what to look for, hear for, feel for to know that I'm getting detonation...

thanks,

You dont feel detonation, you hear it. Detonation sounds like marbles being droped on a metal plate. On these trucks, detonation is quite pronounced.

Miami:

If you hear it, get off the throttle! Just take it 'easy' until you find out why it detonated. Having said that, I don't think you have any worries--your L is stock and you live in a warm climate(I know, I was born-n-raised there). Colder air may bring on detonation if youe engine is already on 'the ragged edge' with mods. Have fun in the sun!

Detonation is sometimes hard to hear. It is a light rattling sound, kind of like BB's in a metal coffee can.

If you have an open air cleaner, the noise from the blower can make it hard to hear, unless you have some very pronounced detonation. I find it's easier for a passanger to hear it, because they don't get as much blower whine on that side of the truck.

So on my truck, i have a chip. When i am at a hard acceleration (not at wot) right before it shifts i hear a knock, knock, knock very quickly but once it shifts to second it is fine. Is this just piston slap that our trucks are known for?

I thought detonation usually occurs as a vehicle runs lean.........therefore not enough fuel, and the combustion chamber doesn't have enough fuel to spark evenly, therefore the "pinging"

But as rich as these trucks run from the factory, I mean look at your tailpipes, I would think on a stock truck, detonation would never be an issue, unless you wake up one morning braindead, and use 87 octane or something. Therefore, should stock trucks ever see this being an issue?

I have not heard of a stock truck having this problem as long as good fuel is used. The BB's in a coffe can is a good description.

The only time I had detonation was when I put some 91 octane in the tank during a road trip. Cruise along at 80 and step on the gas; that is when I heard it.

Detonation can be from A/F being off and/or timing/spark advance.

Question Detenation/Pinging???

Hello everybody.

I was just curios, what does these two sound like??? I have straight pipes, and you can probably imagine how loud they are, so is there any tips, or tricks to listen for it??? I read somewhere to drive next to a wall, and punch it, I'm so confused, and I don't want my truck to screw up again. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Guys,

PLEASE read at LEAST page or 2 of posts before posting the same questions. I merged this thread with a post from the second page.... The first Detonation post was less than 20 posts back from the most recent.

Though I DONT want to wake the search police, common sense would say that the issue of detonation had been covered a couple times in the 20,000 threads.

Thanks In advance

Doug

You need to pay attention to det. with the cooler dense air of winter its more likely you'll have it now if your going to. Det. is either from running to lean or timing is advanced to much. The lean condition causes a lot of unwanted heat and can result in burning the tips off your plugs. Kinda like pulling the oxygen lever on a cutting torch. You can try several things to stop it like running octane boosters or colder plugs. Send your chip back and have it reburned. No matter what you do just driving around town your going to run rich because of the lack of boost going on. Just be careful and listen for it, your truck may be trying to tell you something.

Cooler air itself will not promote detonation. The problem often occurs in areas where the fuel quality is lower in the winter. Many of these areas receive "winter fuel" that is lower octane than summer fuel. With equal octane you'll be less likely to experience detonation in cooler air.
