Yes, too much octane is NOT good. The factory ignition in our trucks isn't the most powerful ignition either, but it's decent. Being able to ignite super high octane may be of a concern.

might wanna look into it
They're probably talking about some of the 76 stations. Some carry 100 octane unleaded "race" fuel.

The 76 where I got mine was in San Marino, last I checked it was $4.59/ gallon. I've only used it when I had a detonation issue with my chip when CA went to 91 octane. I put in about 4 gallons with about 16 gallons of 91, and the pinging stopped. You could feel a slight increase in power, but I would be hesitant to use it regularly. I later had the chip reburned for 91 octane.

You can have one of the tuners burn a race program for you that would make better use of the added octane, but I don't think with the stock pcm or a street chip you're going to be gaining much with the added octane.

Question

OK.....................so, not having much knowledge in this area, I ask the following:

What octane gas are you "supposed" to use on a Lightning? Is 87 ok to use without problems, or should you use 93 Octane all the time..................

My thoughts were that 87 Octane was ok to use because of the low compression ration...

please expand oh knowledgeable ones

I would only use "premium unleaded fuel" only. The SVT supplement shows 91 octane minimum.

My bet would be if you used 87-89 you would get a lot of detonation, and your warranty would probably come into question if a failure occurred.

Check this out

MiamiFutureL,
I found this site along time ago and I have been going back time and time again to look up all kinds of crazy info. It is a visual explanation of how car engines work and what octane is and why their are different kinds. I am not trying to be a smartass or say you don't know how a basic engine works, I just thought this could help yourself or others that wondered about all kinds of stuff. It has way more than car engines too.
