K-rapp. This'll get you 2001 owners out looking under your truck in 5 minutes flat

And the key word is FLAT.

For the first time last night I looked at my spare and guess what...
It is the infamous Wilderness AT of Ford Exploder fame!
This is the dump site for all those bad tires. Coincidently, I had an appointment today for my Clunk and when I mentioned it to the service writer he didn't even blink - "we'll get you another tire."

Had he said, no, my argument was ready to rip:

A tire notorious for failing at low inflation levels. A tire that when used as a spare may sit ummaintained for years and then when needed be put into service under imperfect conditions without benefit of having been inflated for some time. A recipe for disaster.

So, go out and look under your truck and let us know if you helped the Firestone Fiasco unload its Krap tires by hiding them under your $32,000 truck...

superfords Sep 6, 2001 12:26 AM

well, not exactly true....

while I can't speak for everyone else, but my truck has a 16" spare Firestone Wilderness HT tire, which has two things in common with the recall tires, one is that it's a Firestone, two is that it's name is Wilderness, aside from that the tire is completely different.

The tires that were recalled by Firestone were the ATX and the Wilderness AT in size 235/75R15.

I'm not denying that I'd just as soon not have a Firestone tire on my truck at all, and I do think it is stupid for Ford to put 4 of one brand tire and then a completely different brand (not to mention wheel size) spare. But I guess an 18" aluminum wheel with an extra F1 would get sortof costly.

Anyway I just wanted to point out that Ford is NOT using recall tires as spares (not on my truck anyway).

later,
chris

P.S. just out of curiousity, is your spare a 16"? Are you sure that it is an AT? I kind of doubt that it is, but if it is does it say "Temporary Use Only" on it? Because believe it or not there are some Firestone wilderness AT tires that are not being replaced under recall because they are clearly marked as temporary spare tires.

SuperFords - here I am - shot my mouth off - and can't answer your question 'cause the dealer kept the truck overnight for the work.

NC SVT F150 Sep 6, 2001 01:16 AM

check the link no guessing

I had notice that I had a Firestone on my '01 and thought the same thing that they were getting ridd of the bad tires by mounting them as spares. But go to the below link and check. Mine is a wilderness HT not AT curently NOT in recall but weren't we told this before they recalled more tires. Also it does inclued 15" 16" 17" it's in the link F150s and other Fords.

"clearly marked temporany use only"...Not on my spare tire, how do I know? Cuz I had a friggin flat and had to put it on the rear of the truck. Didn't do any speeds above 60, but it was fun pulling out into traffic and watching that punk tire try and keep up with the Goodyears:eek:

papabear Sep 6, 2001 08:40 AM

odd

Is this spare only on 2001 trucks? My 2000 has a Goodyear Wrangler on a 17" steel rim. Seems strange to me that a Firestone spare was used when Goodyear is the spec tire for the truck. Every other ford I have owned always came with a spare of the same make as the OEM tires. That only applies to full size spares and not a mini spare.

John..

My '00 has a Wilderness HT for a spare too.

FYI...Dodge puts an matching 17" aluminum wheel (just like the one on the truck) and matching tire under every Dakota R/T, but puts a damn 16" Wrangler on a steel rim under the fullsize Ram SS/Ts.
It looks like if DMC could afoard to put a matching wheel under the R/T, Ford could put one under the "L".

gee i thought where where talking full size to full size looks like you got no room to talk about full size L's, we not talking about Rangers here.

Has anyone every seen the same whell and tire combo on a Ford other than a steel wheel. My powerstroke had a steel spare but Aluminum mags and the tires where the same size and brand.

Just think if they put that 9 1/2" wheel, It probly would have be draging the ground

Hmmm...I believe we were talking about spare tires on performance trucks. And I was also talking about the wheel they put under my FULLSIZE Ram aswell. Looks like you need to read what the hell I wrote before you open your mouth. It takes an ignorant SOB not to be able to read a FACT about another brand of truck without getting his feathers ruffled....its ok though.

The "L" maybe faster than an R/T but at least it has a fullsize spare! (I am sure the 99% of you guys with a sense of humor will see the humor intended here....but if your in NC...IT'S A JOKE!)

BTW when Ford makes a Ranger worth mentioning I might.

Why do the dodge boys have to hang out in the Lightning board?

Dreaming of owning a real Truck?
Crying because they bought a dodge instead.

Well When you buy a Lightning maybe we can accept you in our group with open arms.

PS I did read your post and included your qute (dont know how to do it properly but it is from your post)

Sorry i was refering on this line.

It looks like if DMC could afoard to put a matching wheel under the R/T, Ford could put one under the "L".

you just said they didnt do it on the Full Size.

There seems to be alot of this going on on this board. I hate to keep dragging it around but I really would like to be able to get more info from people who DO OWN LIGHTING TRUCKS.

I think this is a great forum and I spent about 2 months before i purchased the '01 L. I did own a '95 L but rolled it on Thanksgiving Morning. See Photo below.

Bought my first Ford in 1976 yes a Hippy Van, '86 Bronco '88 Mustang GT Conv. and bought a '95 Powerstoke to replace the 95 L. No L's were avaiable in '97.

It is hard to tell if anyone does own a Lightning even some had doubts about me on my first post but we need to help each outher with REAL problems and not get commits From the NON FORD Crowd.

I don't own an "L" but here is a little info for you..it is spelled "L I G H T N I N G".

I promise you my Ram is every bit a real truck. In 97 and 98 when the SS/Ts where made they were THE fastest fullsize production trucks. It will spank an comparably equiped normaly aspirated 5.4L Ford any day. But thats beside the point....Lightnings are SC and intercooled and they hell of allot faster than my truck. Big deal...you want me to clap for YOU?

As for dreaming of owning a Lightning...there is no dream. I am placing my order for a 2002 Oct 1st. If you read any of my other posts before you opened your mouth and made an ass out of yourself you would know that. BBQMAN knows me quite well and EVERYBODY else on this board has already excpeted me "with open arms". I doubt your black balling of me carries much weight at all seeing your just a newbie yourself. Also when registering I didn't see anywhere where it said you must own a "L" to post here. I do own a 99 Expedition if that makes you feel any better.

Superfords made the comment that it might cost to much to put a matching wheel and tire under the Lightning, and I just pointed out that DMC did it with the R/T and that Ford very well could have with the "L" had they chosen to. I am willing to bet most people didn't know the R/T had an extra usable tire and wheel (and I am sure most didn't care), but why that ticked you off is a mystery to me...maybe your ego was threatened by that puny little spare tire? Don't worry...like your wife always tells you...size don't matter. :D

superfords Sep 6, 2001 02:54 PM

allright kids, lets play nice. you all please kiss and make up...ok. we're all friends here...

most of the time anyway :D

Hey Ram- If you are going to "correct" someone about their spelling maybe YOU should first learn to spell. I didn't spend a lot of time reading your reply to NC SVT but I remember seeing at least three misspelled words. You are FULL OF SH@T if you think a 97 or 98 Dodge was the fastest production truck at that time. Just ask my buddy with a 98 SST-he went 10.40 in the 1/8th stock and 10.10 with gears, exhaust, shift kit and filter. My 97 Chevy w/350 at the same time went 9.90 stock and 9.60 with exhaust and filter. When he puts the 100 horse shot to it it only goes 9.40. Sorry excuse for a truck.

abullerm Sep 7, 2001 02:04 PM

I'm glad I have a steel rim under my HD. If it was the same as the other 4 the price of the truck would have been $1200 more.
