My Friggin Insurance Co Just Figured Out What A Lightning Is

I bought a 99 Lightning new in 99 and was surprised that my insurance went down from my car. When I renewed I got a 5% discount for no tickets/accidents. When I traded the 99 for my 01, my insurance went up $50.00 per six months, no big deal. Last night I get home from a looong day at work and I get my renewal policy. Good thing Iam sitting down when I opened it up cuz, I was looking at a rate increase of $265.00 per six months. Me thinking that there was some sort of f*%kup, I call AIG and I was informed that the "symbol" for my truck went from an 11 to a 15. The agent didn't know why the rating for my F-150 went up, but said a Mustang GT has a rating of 20. Just venting!!!!!!! New Jersey insurance suckssssssssss:mad:

RTKILLA 08-07-2001 06:22 PM

Well I'm sure that new crash test didn't help out.

you have AIG environmental insurance? thats what my company has and all our vehicles are on that policy. I didn't get nothing from them about that?

Correction that wasn't loud enough.
NEW JERSEY INSURANCE SUCKSSSSSSSSSS

Luckily I got on NJM, but if I had to change I think I would move out of state.

Just for the fun of it, I check the difference in insurance rates between my 98 reg. cab 4x4 and a 00 Lightning, and to my surprise, it was only about $15(cdn)/month or $180(cdn)/year more. A Mustang would be a difference story.

Time for new Insurance Co. If my insurance co. raised my rates like that, I would cancel on the spot.

I posted back my concern when the Insurance Institute failed our trucks on the 40 mph offset, saying that it was "just an excuse to raise rates on the best selling vehicle in in the world". Maybe I was right?

We can thank safety Nazi Ralph Nader for this.

Like Gasoline, Electricity and Natural Gas in California, just another excuse to rip off the consumer.

At least insurance companies don't factor in superchargers...

Fast Gator 08-07-2001 07:00 PM

I believe my insurance company IS factoring in the Eaton. Next I guess I'll have to list my mods and dyno report, so they can factor in the hp increase. Hate to think how much it would rise if I had gotten tickets every time I have been stopped. Did somebody say NJ Insurance Sucks?

My ins. co. classifies it as a 15 also, a "performance vehicle". My old truck was a 5. Canceling will do you no good whatsoever. Only way to get the rates down is to have it classified as a 2nd or 3rd vehicle with limited mileage (thats what I did) . All the companies i could think to call knew by the VIN # it was a L.

Kraw 08-07-2001 07:03 PM

So, the insurance on a L is lower than on a 01 Stang GT? that is good news! My GT runs just under $100 a month, like 550 every 6 mos. What should I expect on a L? I am 26 and married

MRBBQMAN 08-07-2001 07:13 PM

my "L" is less than my heavier F-250 PS's and much less than my super duty's thru State Farm. a lot goes into a rating besides performance. theft, frequency of accidents, etc ($'s lost is what they care about)

Amen.

I have my insurance through AAA, and it came up in their system (I was eavesdropping on the screen...) as a Lightning, but it was still much cheaper than the 99 Tahoe 4x4 that I traded for the L.

Jay Lincoln 08-07-2001 07:57 PM

DB, I'm with AAA also. My insurance went down from my 95' Cobra. I pay about $1000 per year, but have a perfect record.

State Farm has mine listed as an F-150 Styleside. They don't know the Lightning.

We need to keep it that way.

I'm really happy with my insurance cost at this point. I currently insure 3 vehicles: 2001 Lightning, 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee (don't ask; it was the wife's idea) (both full coverage) and a 1994 Honda Accord - liability. I am 26, my wife is 26, clean records. I pay about $140/ month on all 3. I think the insurance breakdown is about $65 for the L, $55 for the Jeep and $20 for the Honda. Good thing the insurance co. doesn't rate the L like a sports car!!
