performance exhaust upgrade help

Pulling my hair out here.... Just got around to upgrading my bone stock 04 L's exhaust. Wanting a real aggressive, deep throaty roar- no crackling popcorn machine sound, and i dont want to get too deep into the aftermarket stuff- trying to keep her fairly virgin. So i got the flowmaster catback system- great deal on amazon. Installed it and was very dissapointed with the sound. Not much meaner than stock to me. So - i tweaked it with 2 flowmaster super 44's (no x-over, just 2 duals out the side). Supposed to be the loudest street mufflers they make. Pretty simple, and made it somewhat throatier but still not near as deep as i feel it should be based on hundreds of you tube clips of similar setups (stock 4 cat mids). Also lost quite a bit of torque & hp instanly- im guessing because they are straight outs, so.... i bought a cheap xpipe to put in before the mufflers, but... it wont fit- too narrow center to center for the mufflers. But i got it to slip on the mid pipes, so i said *&$# it- ill run that with no mufflers at all. And to my surprise the resulting sound was pretty darn close to what i was looking for to begin with- but i was shocked because i figured with NO mufflers it would sound very loud, obnoxious and like a sick dying race car, but it doesnt at all. Is the 4 stock cats holding it back that much, or could MY cats be blocked and causing a $300 performance catback system to sound like stock mufflers???????
