Warranty Problem: I'n Getting Screwed!! (long)

Well, here's the story:
About four weeks ago I paid cash for a 2000 L from Mike Davidson Ford in Jacksonvile, Florida. I noticed before I bought it that it had a chrome open element K@N. Not knowing much about thesae trucks, I had the dealership check it out.

Both the salesman and the finance manager told me that the filter was the only mod, and my warranty was not affected at all. I specifically asked about the warranty, since I had no idea about the trucks history.

Well, last nite as I'm driving I start to hear a loud rattle. I take it in this morning, and they say that I've got an aftermarket x-pipe/cats and cat-back, and the warranty doesn't cover it. A weld broke on the exhaust. They won't fix it, and basically refused to talk about it.

Here's the interesting part...as a partial trade in on the L I sold them my 11sec 96 Z28. It didn't have cats. It'll cost the dealership $1800 for parts to get the car back emission legal to sell. The sales manager said that they'd fix the problem with the L for free if I bring them the stock parts. His words were "let's make a deal. I can help you if you help me. We'll talk when you get me the parts." I have a witness to this statement.

My mom's a lawyer and wants to take them to court over this. Do y'all think I have a case. They broke a promise and tried to bribe me.

Sounds like you have the Bassani full exhaust system, and the cat have been known to go bad. Is the truck loud?

As for the warranty part im not sure....

The truck doesn't have headers. But from the manifolds back they said was aftermarket. It's only loud if I get on it. Otherwise, it's a nice pleasant rumble. Oh yeah, they said the muffler's are flowmaster. I'm thinking its a bassini x-pipe w/ a mufflex cat-back??

Here's my opinion since I work at a dealer by day...

You obviously bought the truck used. So that means that you are now dealing with the "used car dept" of the dealership. If the truck still has basic warrenty on it, there's no way Ford is going to cover what they didn't make https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif.

So now you ARE at the mercy of the used car manager. In a situation like this, what you need to do is find out what your used car warrenty is. Most states have legal used car warrenties. Up here in NY, it can be 30 days, 60 days, or 90 days, depending on the milage of the vehicle. They don't say that the dealer MUST fix anything, just that they are responsible for it within that time. The thing that might be on your side, is that your bad part is an emmisions related part, and there may be a federal law of some sorts that will cover it. You have to dig into it. Hope this helps...

If it is not in writing it will be tough to win,but tell them you will give them the Z exhaust but they are going to have to fix your truck and GIVE you a warranty in WRITING that way they can not get out of it.And I mean warranty everything!!!!!!!Even if it is chipped.Stan

All they're saying is wrong is a broken weld? If that's the case, why didn't take 5 seconds and 10 bucks to weld it back up? Just drop by any muffler shop and pay the guy 10 bucks and he'll weld it back up.

If you traded in your 11 second camaro, you must be mechanically inclined, just deal with it. Besides, most used cars are sold AS-IS, with balance of factory warranty. Meaning, you inherit any warranty voiding mods the previous owner performed. Read your sales contract and look for an out, but I doubt you'll find one.

You buy used, you take your chances, but I hardly think a broken weld is something to be talking to lawyers about. I must be missing something.

Tell the dealer to replace the x-pipe w/a stock one and you will give them the Z parts.
Then send the x-pipe to me! https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif LOL

You sure it isn't the cat that is grenaded making all that rattling?

If it is just a broken hangar, have a muffler shop weld it up.

How many days you had it. You can return it within a 48hr??? period or something like that.

Take it to a muffler shop have them weld it for under $50 and screw the dealer.

Well, I talked to the dealership today and here's what they said: They thought the rattling was a broken weld, but they can't find one!? The service manager said that the rattle sounded like it was coming from inside the exhaust system.

Someone mentioned something about bassini cats going bad? I'm gonna pissed if I have to replace the x-pipe.

1RedDevil May 31, 2001 07:53 PM

If the cat is bad it has nothing to do with the x-pipe. The Bassani cats are approx. $250 a side.
Just make them pay for the parts and the install and retun the Z-parts.
Better check it closley for it being chipped if you have any factory warranty left.
You could be like me. I bought my 99L with 4000 miles on it from a local Ford (non SVT) dealer with a PSP filter already on it. I got the remainder of the factory 36 month warranty and purchased a 6-60,000 mile ESP Ford warranty. Now, every time I take my L in for warranty work I just keep telling them "That's the way YOU'All sold it to me". Prove they didn't.
I have more fun with this dealer over pulleys, exhaust, convertors, chips, traction devices when I come in for non-after market related repairs. They just laugh now and say they don't want to hear it.
