Question about late 80's Mustangs?

I saw a late 80's Mustang GT the other day and the hood said 5.2L H.O, was their ever such a thing as a 5.2L H.O motor? It also had Cobra emblems on it. How could I tell if it was a Cobra or not? Thanks for the help.

No 5.2L engines in the late model (late-80s to mid-90s Mustangs). The only v8 engine offered from '79-95 (not counting the '95 Cobra R which had a 351W [5.8L]) was the 302" engine. It is actually 4.9xxx liters, but Ford rounded it up to 5.0.

The Cobra was not offered in the late-80s. It came back in '93 and was the only Fox-3 Mustang Cobra. Well, I take that back. There was one in '79-80 called the King Cobra. 175hp v8.

Either the guy is a total poser, or he is running a stroker engine. I have a stroked 302 in my LX...its a 331, so its a 5.4L motor. No badges on the side of the car for me, though. https://www.f150online.com/f150board/wink.gif

In the early 1980's , Ford produced a 255 cid (4.2 liter) v-8 engine. These engines were mostly populated in the LTD-2, Cougar and the Thunderbirds. I don't recall if the Mustang had them or not. I've not seen a 5.2 anywhere...

It might have had a small stroker in it and the guy just modified his 5.0 to read 5.2. I think Lunati made a 315 ci stroker.

Actually, in 79, the only Mustang to have a 302 was the Cobra.
80 - 81 had the 255 V8
82 saw the return of the 302 with a hint of performance
83 same as 82 but with 4 bbl and optional 5 speed
84 same as 83
84.5 two into one into two exhaust
85 last year the mustang had a carb
86 - 93 EFI with minor engine internal differences

Traumapirate,
My 79 Fox Mustang had a 302, and it was NOT a Cobra. Wouldn't have ordered anything else back then, but turned out to be the worst POS I've ever owned. 302 was 514 bucks; more than air-conditioning, and the most expensive option in 79. Total price of my car was $6500.

Sorry, I was trying to go off of memory, but I guess my memory isn't that good anymore. I never seen any 302s in 79 that weren't in a Cobra, but if you had one, then they had to offer it.

88-89 had a Cobra model but it was merely an appearance package that gave the 'Cobra' decal on the (I think) right side of the trunk. It was not the difference that is between the current GT and Cobra models.
