Thumbs up PSP Caltracs

Hey all, as many of you know, I have been working with Calvert Racing to design a new style Cal-tracs traction device that fits the Gen 2 Lightning without having the problems of the original design that was based off the regular F-150.

The new design is completely different than what is currently offered. The front plates have been redone so that they will work with Bassani cat-back exhaust with no modifications. The bars are a bit shorter to accomidate the new plates. And to fix the problem of the new U-bolts not fitting across the top of the springs properly, the new set up comes with plates that go between the spring and U-bolts.

PSP is pleased to announce that the new set ups are ready for order. Also, since we designed the new front plate setup, Calvert Racing has given PSP the exclusive right to sell them, so you can't buy THIS setup from anywhere else, even Calvert direct.

The new PSP/Calvert Caltracs are $340 (includes the U-bolts) plus shipping. For order info, contact Spiro from PSP at Sales@powersurgeperformance.net

Hello all..

Does anyone have this new setup on a truck ? I am wondering if it will bind or slip.. I have seen other traction devices that end up rotating on the rearend when they are under load.. If the point where the cal-tracs are connected to the rearend is not welded, how will it keep from moving ? Are U-bolts going to be enough ?

Not a suspension expert.. just wondering...

Uh..yeah.. you could check out the Calvert site too Actually, I didn't direct anyone there because with what they have there for info, it's kind of hard to understand if you've never seen the setup before. Even the directions that Calvert supplies, are generic and confusing, so PSP will be adding our own suppliment directions with the kits to clear up some confusion on the install.

Joel, thanks for the kind words. You weren't getting in the way, I was just joking around. I should have put up the Calvert site in my post as well .

Question

These sound like a great way to gain traction... I'm relatively new to the auto performance world, does anyone have a technical explanation of the setup and use of these devices? Pro's/Con's? I tried searching the board but couldn't find anything. Sorry about being in the dark on these, but maybe someone here could explain the finer points of traction bars. Thanks!!!

Suspension is quite a complex area when it comes to improving on what you have. I myself had to do some research on the Cal-tracs concept before I was willing to give them a try. But I think I can give a quick explaination of how these work. You have a mount on the rear axle. You then have a pivot plate assembly on the front leaf spring mount. You have an adjustable bar the mates the two. When driving around on the street, you can leave the setup "unloaded", meaning your suspension works as stock. When you go to the track, you simply loosen the nut, and twist the bar, which makes it longer, and pivots the front plate assembly so that a cross bolt contact the spring a few inches rearward, then you tighten the nut. By doing this, you now stop axle rotation on launch, which is what usually gets wheelspin started. You ALSO are moving the instant center of the rear end back farther, which improves traction. This is the complicated thing to explain, so just think of it as it improves weight transfer. Hope this helps, any other questions, just ask!
