That is a gorgeous thing to behold. How much did it cost to get the caliper ground down to fit behind the wheel?

When I talked to the guy that did OneLap of America's truck, it was almost a G.

DreaminaboutL, What area of the caliper needed to be ground down for clearence and how muck stock was removed? Thanks.

DreaminAboutL Mar 25, 2001 01:50 PM

This is Rob's Lightning, alias: Bolt.

He did the install 100% himself, including grinding... I'll will let him talk to it.

Spike: I will have race tires and Brembo's too at buttonwillow https://www.f150online.com/f150board/biggrin.gif

Those are indeed sweet, Azeem. Sure would like to check them out, but don't think I am going to make it to Buttonwillow, Ford is just dragging their feet on my i/c repair. https://www.f150online.com/f150board/frown.gif
But anyway, just curious as to why Bolt did not swap the wheels for the 01's? If I get this option you won't catch anyone grinding on my Brembos.

Looking forward to a ride!

AlphaD:
I'm doing a project at UC Riverside for the next couple months. I'll be driving the L down the week of Buttonwillow, so maybe we can arrange to get together. To bad about the IC - I was hoping to caravan with you to Buttonwillow.
BTW, get extra memory for OSX - I suggest minimum of 256 mb.

Beginning to end install. Pulled old caliper,rotor/hub,dust shield off.
Cut down dust shield that hit new disk to retain the bearing cup. Installed new hub.
Installed new Brembo bracket. Filled the Brembo calipers and line with fluid, bench bled. Installed new rotors, installed new calipers, switched brake line as quickly as possible. Bled brakes with vacuum pump.
Put wheel on, spun and pressed. Nice indentation on the caliper where it was going to hit.
Seems like I took about 1/8" off using a small 4.5" grinder. Also took down a couple of corners that hit. Started with passenger side being very careful took about 3 hours. Driver side took about 45 minutes to an hour.
End result after polishing and painting.
Cannot tell it has been cut down. Looks the same except for the Brembo decal. I also included a pic. of the air intakes for the brake cooling ducts.

I have a two set's of 2000 wheels, one with racing R1's and the other with F1's. The amount of material I took off the calipers is minimal and far cheaper than buying a couple set's of new wheels.

REDHOTL Mar 25, 2001 10:55 PM

Bolt, Thanks for sharing your handy work. I think the biggest shortcoming on the L is not a lack of horse power but a lack of braking power. Now for the real pay off. How do you like the way the new brakes work, and have you got them to fade?

Azeem:

Are you going to have these brakes on your Lightning prior to Buttonwillow?

Refresh my memory: racing tires and upgraded brakes!!!?

If so, now I'm dreamin...
(and definitely want a ride in your L with my helmet cam)
