Installed K&N air filter didn't notice any difference
I installed a K&N air filter today. In my 2000 L. Took it out for a spin.A few times I went WOT. Didn't notice any performance difference. If there was any it was probably to little to notice.I hope I get better gas milage out of it at least. Bob

Hey Bob,
Great start. You will get some improvement but you may not feel a lot of it; you should hear quit a bit more noise. The main point is you have taken the first step. Things will get better each time you drop a little more money. Hey Bob, i felt the same way. I put the stock back in and returned the K&N, kept the oil. I now have the PSP kit, big difference. Performance and sound, i love it. I am sure all the kits are similar, but thats what i did.

My first induction mod was cutting some holes in the bottom of the stock airbox. That helped about a tenth at the track. Now I have a large open element filter and it runs exactly the same as the modded airbox with the stock filter. I have had a K&N on every vehicle I've owned in the last seven or so years (which is about 10 vehicles or so) and have never seen an improvement on the track. I use them 'cause they never have to be replaced not because I expect a 20 HP gain. The only way a K&N or similiar filter is gonna improve performance is if your paper filter is in bad shape or if you go to a different type ie open element vs stock airbox. I'm not against replacement type filters-I just put one on my new bike-but in my experiences I have never seen a performance improvement Just my .02

What AUTOMAN said. If you used the K&N drop-in filter instead of the conical one (you didn't say) then holes in the bottom of the stock box will help like LTNBOLT did to his.
If you used the K&N filter cone, you might want to try the 12" S&B. ------------------ Jim Black '00 #1,757 built 3/30/00 Clear corners JDM street program JDM 2# blower pulley (ordered) J.L. Stage II ram-air FRPP Oval throttle body (ordered) 90mm MAF MagnaFlow Exhaust |
Yeah, what Automan and gforce said.
The 90 mm MAF will give you a good reason to put the 12" S&B filter on. It's all under Airbox on my website. The boost gauge tells the tale. I updated it with the evolution to the 90 mm MAF. ------------------ Later, Chuck Black 00 Chuck's Lightning Page [This message has been edited by LTNBOLT (edited 03-21-2001).] |
Do you need to reset your memory for something like this to feel all of the benefits?

Bob, I did the same thing and had the same result. I couldn't feel any appreciable performance difference. Two weeks later I canned the K&N and airbox for a Pro-m mass air and cone style filter. I noticed a big seat-of-the-pants difference. It must have done some good, because with the Pro-m and a Swanson chip, I made 377 RWHP. These are the ONLY mods that I have made.
