Engine Teardown Started - Something's Missing! (56k No Way!)
So I started tearing in to the engine. I found the hole in the block on the driver's side:
https://img474.imageshack.us/img474/8453/1003187ip2.jpg So I assumed that the passenger side head would be in fine shape, and I only killed one cylinder. So, I'm finishing up pulling the passenger head to sell to a fellow NLOC member, and pack it up to ship out tomorrow. Pulling the heads in the engine bay is a PITA!!! There's 2 10mm nuts holding the water line that runs along the top of the block to the back and into the heater core (or back, not sure the direction of flow...). Those 2 10mm nuts are practically against the firewall and attached to the cylinder head. Those same 10mm nuts are then attached to 13mm STUDS! ARRRGH... I crawled into the engine bay to get leverage to get them off. Not fun. You CANNOT get a socket back there. Anyway. I pull off the passenger head. UHhhhh... What's missing? https://img395.imageshack.us/img395/1522/1003926gm2.jpg Hey, what's in that hole? Is the piston sitting bottomed out? |

NOPE!! It's EMPTY!! Where the heck is the piston?? I'm guessing it's in a million pieces in the oil pan. No dings in the pan, but I could see some shrapnel in there after I removed the timing cover: (not the best picture, you ought to see it from other angles! The pan is FILLED!) https://img405.imageshack.us/img405/4043/1003922sd1.jpg I can't wait to pull the driver's side head. Wonder how many pistons are missing in there... |
man that sucks, can i ask why aren't you just pulling the entire motor first and then remove the heads?
|
that was my thought as well.. its just easier to pull the whole thing...
|
Faster to get the head off... limited space in the garage to move the truck around to get the lift in there.
for those who want to swap heads/cams w/o pulling the engine - DON'T! It sux to put it lightly.:help: |
lol OUCH dude, what did you do? play too hard?
|
Wow!
New block and new internals! Have fun with that too! It'll all be worth it in the end when you fire it back up and drive off. |
Sorry to see the carnage.
Stock long block? What mods? How did it happen? |
Pulled the motor in mine today. Same thing, #2 piston and rod no longer exists. #6 the rod no longer exists. Bis A hole in the block but luckily only bent valves and broken guides on the heads. JLP short block going in.

I see a name change coming when the replacement motor goes in
SUPER Max Power  Sorry to see it SP :( we all lived with the possibility of eating a stock L motor and it seems to have got most of us eventually  GOOD LUCK BRO :beers: |
I want to see more pics of the tear down.
