NEW TIRES ON 1BADFRD'S L, NOT F-1S

Well, Alex and I are both in need of new tires and are not thriiled to give Goodyear a $1,000+ every 25,000 miles. Harder tires are available but in 16" so the first swap involves biting the bullet for the rims; however, the change can be made for a total less than the cost of F-1's the first time and considerably less the second time and the tires we are looking at will last 2-3 times longer than the f-1s. Yea, yea, yea, they don't have as good traction, but the traction of F-1s sucks anyway and both Alex and I run MT ETs at the strip and do no rat and very little street racing so these tires are a real option for us. I drive a lot of miles every year.

Here are just some of the tires we looked at.

TIRE TYPE MFG LOAD DIAM SPEED UTQG PRICE
295/45ZR18 F1GS GDYR 1,687 28.4 Z300 225

285/65HR16 SCORP ZERO PIRELLI 2535 30.6 H 420 $150

275/70HR16 LTX M/S MICHLIN 4729 31.3 H 440 $120

H speed rating is 130. Alex chose the Michlin because they were in stock, the Pirelli are backordered from the factory and nobody has any as all manufacturers are busy making 235 sizes.

alex also scored some Ford NASCAR alum rims which are 16X7. I'm sure BABOLT will not approve and suggest that at least 8" rims be used for this wide a tire, but that's his opinion. I am looking at some alum rims at Discount tire that are 8" and 10" wide.

These look pretty good on Alex's black truck

I want to try the Pirellis. Discount says the factory says 3 weeks for delivery. I'm not into the cord yet, I'll keep looking at wheels.

The speedo error is no big deal to live with. Get a buddy and go out and have him dri e at some important speeds like 55, 65, 70 and look at your speedo and write down and memorize the speed off. At 70 it's probably only 3-5 mph. Then you have it. Supposedly ford can do it but noone has ever posted here that they got it done. Supposedly Sal can do it. Mike T. of Superchip told me no they couldn't do it. Option 1 is the easiest. I don't remember ever having a speedo that was right when I was young. We were always changing trannys (4-speeds) and rear ends and none of mine were right on. I drove on the tach rpm for years.

99SVT Discount told me the Ultra 50s were only available in 8" and quoted me 90 for those. Which Discount did you get the 10" from and who was your salesman?

All you need are smoked tail light covers, and you are blacked out.

How about turning performance, it that affected?

Noel,

You've obviously never driven through Ohio w/ Michigan plates on July 4th. https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif

They were pulling cars over for 3-4 mph over the limit and handing out tickets in a production line.

I like my speedos accurate. https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif

I never drive on holiday weekends. Let everybody else kill each other and it's highly unlikely I will ever drive thru Ohio with Michigan plates. Guess I'm safe since I can remember if my speedo is off by 5 mph to go 65 and know its 70. https://www.f150online.com/f150board/biggrin.gif

Hey Noel!
I really don't care what tires you put on which wheels. I was only concerned about your safety with the wheel / tire combo for drag racing. I must say that I forgot that you guys were not 1/4 mile racing and therefore did not see the higher terminal speeds that we were seeing. This is a dead issue as far as I am concerned so no need to bring it up again. As they say in the car business there is an a$$ for every seat. So if it is offered up there will be someone standing in line to buy it. https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif

That is one butt-ugly truck!

Actually BA because these rims will be for street tires and I do go fast in mine anyway I am going to get either 8 or 10" rims. I asked the guy at Discount what the difference in handling between the 8" and 10" and got the impression he didn't know. Which do you think would be the best for 295mm tires that are driven mostly on the highway sometimes really fast, but not much on curvy 2 lanes?

If you're posting, I guess you're looking for comments, so here goes:

Ummm,....errr,.... ahhhhhh,.... no comment!

Noel,
I would go with the recommendation of the tire manufacturer. Yes we all know you can cheat a 1/2 inch here, a 1/2 there. It is the wide disparity that can get you into trouble. https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif

If anyone is interested I think those black rims are available in the army surplus store behind Rambo modified rocket launcher just across form the empty green 50 caliber ammo casses.

Lightningquick Sep 25, 2000 09:38 PM

NO offense ,nevermind,Take offense I dont care.If you cant or dont want to afford new tires, dont buy a lightning. There is no excuse for how that looks.I would not let my truck sit in my driveway in the winter looking like that in fear of someone driving by never mind driving it on the street!!Now imagine that truck without 1.67 gallons of tire dressing on each tire!! https://www.f150online.com/f150board/wink.gif I gotta go now,Ive got to go buy some stock in armor all !!LOL I think im gonna puke.

noelvm Sep 26, 2000 12:13 AM

LIGHTNINGQUICK. It has nothing to do with afford. Personally some of us think anyone who would pay $250 for a tire that will only go 25k is one dumb S.O.B. and that's our opinion, just like you think his truck is ugly! That's your opinion. But in the end it's all opinion. You are entitled to yours and we are entitled to ours. As for how the truck looks, remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As BA says, "There's an a$$ for every seat."
