Old School Steering Wheel
 

I want to replace my stock steering wheel with a
custom , woodgrain , polished spokes wheel. ( aka 1967 GTO etc.)
yes I know old school....

There are no replacement wheels for our Lightnings
and I don't need an airbag etc.

I am thinking of selecting a nice looking wheel and trying to have someone fabricate an adapter that will look almost factory.

Has any one in the world replace their steering wheel and can you give me a source or idea of how to go about it ?

The steering wheel is the first step in a total re-do of the interior.
Plan to use wood grain kits, engine turned billet etc.

Aside from looking ugly and completely out of place, it's also illegal.

How about a nice 1940's project pickup instead? You'll fail inspection with a non AB wheel, not to mention, about every Lightning owner will jihad you on sight.

I'm going on record. If I ever see a Lightning with either a woodgrain dash kit or an "old school" steering wheel, I will set it on fire without hesitation or warning.:bandito:

F150online has sure changed the last few years....
I don't believe I've asked permission or for anyone's approval
just asking if anyone has switch out their steering wheel.

I've been interested in doing this for a couple of years and just saw this on a custom built on " GEARS" a hot rod show on TV, they took out an airbag and replace it with a cool wheel and mention the air bag wheel was ugly.
A Miata make over... So it is not unheard of. If you happened to see the show the wheel they selected was indeed cool and looked real nice in the car.

By the way in our politically correct world, I find old school refreshing..
Hot Rodders of the 50s, 60s were always on the frindges of the law.
Jacked up suspensions, headers, etc.

I've love to find a custom wheel with an Air Bag but if have to I'll swap it out,
In Illinois they don't even glance at the steering wheel, just the smog emissions.

To all of you in the herd that just do things one way please don't describe your self as any kind of hot rodder, just a bunch of me-tos. I took offense at the comment about burning up my truck, seems like a bunch of .......have invaded my beloved F150online and its history of fellow Bolt owners helping each other out.

Grant has a possible option. More modern and has an air bag.
Center section could be chrome painted etc.

LOL, way back in 2000 one of the first Lightnings I looked at had the wood grain dash lol. I thought they came like that :eek:

I saw that show. You have to keep in mind that the entire vehicle has a retro theme... Not just the steering wheel.

I'm not doing just the steering wheel, I have old school wheels AR TT IIs,
and as I said I was re-doing the interior.

I just find the gray/black/theme a tiny bit boring

My favorite was my 1970 GTO..( RA IV,, why oh why did I sell it) it had woodgrain, engine turned dash, black leather, etc.

Over all I agree it is difficult to do it tastefully but I think it can be done.
If the GRANT 514648 wood grain, light gray/black wheel [/B]works (with air bag) it is a strong candidate.

ewwww... Their was a red and yellow L out their ..i think i rember him redoing his wheel and it look purdY nice ! i think it alos had carbN fiber on it...:confused:
