Help!Muffler Shop Won't Install Duals-Illegal

Went to a high performance muffler shop that a friend recommended & I told him I wanted to install 2 dynomax race magnums. He says that he can't do it b/c not only is it illegal to stagger the dual mufflers on the truck, but I will lose plenty of power, gas mileage, etc b/c the computer is not optimize for true duals.
Is this true, at least the legality part in CA?
If so I guess I need to sell the 2 dynomax's I just bought.

Im not aware of it being illegal, atleast its not in Texas. I say find a deffernt muffler shop. It will not mess with the computer either

I am surprised that he didn't tell you that he was going to remove your Blower because it's illegal as well!!

I'm like glad I don't live in Granola Country...or something.

I removed my cats which is illegal and it had no effect on the computer. You need to find a different muffler place.later

If it were illegal to stagger mufflers than all Generation one lightnings would be illegal, thats how they all came.
However from all that I have heard on the board there is verry little if any performance gains to be found by changing mufflers. Unless you went headers, cats and mufflers.
If you want a louder exaust, that is ok, but for performance leave the system alone

To All
I do plan on going to another shop. I just wanna make sure that it is legal in Calif. I am not looking for any gains just a deep thoaty sound. I told him of the bassani that is made for our L & it has dual mufflers, but he insisted that if it came w/ a single muffler, you cannot change to duals.
I just don't want to go to a bunch of different shops that all tell me the same thing.

It is illegal to install duals when the factory did not offer it as an option or was not available from factory. Was smog cert. in Marin County for years says it in the law book.
Just check around you will find someone to do the install. But will probably have to show up in person.

The big chains tend to not want to do much in the way of aftermarket stuff. I found a nice small shop near me that does really good work and didnt even balk at the header install which many others refused.

Second verse, same as the first. Find a new shop https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif

I beg to differ here. I lost .2 consistently byu taking off my muffler. My primary objective was to get the throaty sound, so I went to the track and went 13.8s all day, I also went on a 7 for 10 stretch that included six 13.6s, one 13.71, and three 13.8s, all with the 60' hovering around 2.145-2.2

As compared to stock running 14.0 w/ a best of 13.89

There is one other that broke 12s by taking his muffler off.

PS Best 60' time = 2.139

It may only have a single muffler but it is a true dual system.

Dude that guy is full of *****. My Bassani kit came with true duel exhaust. The muffler has nothing to do with emmisions, just sound control. But you would have to put some kind of headers on there for it to be that sickning loud. My exhaust is the complete kit headers baack and it really isn't that loud. I can still kinda hear my blower (ya right I wish). Tell that guy to screw himself and go somewhere else. Or do it yourself.
