Lightning vs syclone/typhoon??
Uh Oh, they are calling in the Syclone and Typhoon troops to bombard us with numbers and stories. RUN FOR COVER!!!!
Btw, I realize back in their day the Syclone and Typhoons were nice trucks, GM had a great idea, all they needed to do was iron a few wrinkles out. But let's face it, the Lightning not only looks awesome, mean, gorgeous etc. etc., but it handles and drives like a Corvetter or better. PLUS tows 5000 lbs. There is a guy out my way that has a Syclone, nice looking, and it runs pretty well, so I have respect for them, but they cannot compare (IMO) to the Lightnings, Looks, Speed, Handling, and those looks you get from the pretty women as you drive by with the exhaust rumbiling and speakers bumping.
JUST MY OPINION!!!!!! Don't get your panties in a bunch if you don't like it. Thank you.

Time for my .02 worth. Muscle Mustang & Fast Ford ran a BONE STOCK 12,000 mile truck & ran a 13.37 twice in a row! I'll be the first to admit the Syclone has more of a chance at beating a Lightning stock for stock in the Quarter. The Lightnings can be tricky to launch. But on a track with non pro drivers I'd have to say out of 10 races with 10 sets of stock trucks it would be hard to say how many wins. It's just not that cut & dry. next years Lightning is only 2 months away, & will be quicker by up to 6 tenths stock. When all is said & done the LIGHTNING will reign supreme, Quickest & fastest sport truck in the world!!! See what happens when I tell 1 guy about this thread? and so on, and so on, Lloyd

13.37 is fast, I assume slicks = 12s then. why do the mags get the fast ones, back in the day one mag had a syclone that ran 13.0 at like 99, I have not seen a stock sy run that fast.
I agree launching a sy is simple push in the brake bring the revs to 2,000 and go instant boost

As a former fordnatic (7 5.0's) I have to
chime in here. I'm not going to tell you that
one is better than the other. I usually
beat the new lightnings to the 1/8th, but
most beat me to the 1/4 (13.90 stock).
I love my Typhoon, but it's not a matter of
one being better than the other. For me, it's
a matter of money. For the $31,000 that the
new Lightning costs, I bought my pristine
Typhoon and a '89 Turbo Trans Am that runs
11's. I figure that if I get beat in the TY,
I can always break out the other V6.
Whether SY/TY or Lightning, KEEP THE BOOST UP!

I owned a Ty a few years back and it ran 13.7 in stock from. My 2000 Lightning only ran a best of 14.0 stock. I think it is hard to compare the two since the Ty an Syclone were built only for speed. Although my Ty could carry 5 people, the ride was not as stable and comfortable as the Lightning. Now after I modified the Ty, it was quite the truck to reckon with with (low 12's). A friend of mine has a stock Sy with 40k miles and when we race, I would have to say that truck sure can hold its own even though it is 9 years old. Maybe it is because he has a GREAT mechanic (ME!)--- I think it might have to do with the fact that those trucks are very easy to launch( hard!!!!). Any vehicle that is a six cylinder, nine years old, and can run with a new Lightning certainly gets a 'THUMBS UP' from me.
I don't know about you SY/TY guys but I am running 12.978@105.28 on stock tires with less than 1K in mods. Got a better version of my JL chip and I am looking for 12.7's on stock tires and no giggle gas. Beat that with under 1k in mods. you need that AWD to get a good head start so you don't look so bad when I 'BOLT' by you at 1/8mile. I am bored now. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ........

Hey AaronB, since you own both, was the Ty new, when you compared ride (rattle trap etc)? if you bought it new, what was msrp. i imagine there was no deals on a limited product vehicle, like the sy's ty's & lightnings. i'd like to compare the latest model ty's msrp to the gen2 lightning. i remember drooling over the sy's when they came out, but the price was way out there for a s-10 size truck. i'm sure the ty's were a few k more
Some facts that were mis-stated. The governor in a Sy or Ty is factory set at 125. Probably a pretty good idea, they get real loose in the front end after that unless the suspensions are modified. A brick in the wind. Magazine tests back when they were new ranged form 13.04@104 to 13.4@98. The 13.0 was obviously a ringer. Any stock well tuned Sy will run 13.30's. Any stock well tuned Ty will run 13.80's. Mild mods, under $1000 will put you at 12.4 at 106-109, with a very reliable truck.
No Sy's are not for towing or hauling although some people use them for it. Rated capacity of a Sy is 500 lbs. But if you want a Ford for hauling you can get a loaded F-250 for the price of a Lightning. I don't see how the 15-20 HP boost Lightning's are getting is going to help all that much. I have never seen any Lightning go under 14.0 and that includes a bunch of trips to Moroso and all the Lightning's that showed up at the Truck Nats in KC. I have heard from friend who have seen essentially stock trucks go 13.6. Pretty impressive for such a heavy truck. BTW, I'm still looking for the white Lightning with turned up boost and the 100 HP bottle that lives in Pinecrest Florida, I think that might be an interesting race. And if anyone wants to meet me at Moroso LMK when.

and for this comment
well that is great. so that would be the 2001 model right? only took ford 10 years to do it also.
and this commment
thats great, Maybe i should looking into getting one of those awsome S-10 or Ranger Towing Vehicals. Or if i wanted somthing to tow with, i would just get the fullsize, that is ment for it, not a awd, lowered, s-series pickup. the person that thinks like that, must also think. hey i am going to get a corvette to haul the wife and kids in at the same time, and get a new mustang gt so i can save gas with, and drive it like its a new Geo Metro.
and this comment
is it really that hard to put the truck in N, rev it up once, put it D and press the gas in until you have some boost built up and let go the brakes? you must also be one of the people that gets confused when people dont put "push" and "pull" on doors too, uh?

sorry about that "p*ssy truck" remark..i didn't mean to sound that way in referring to sy/tys.....i only said that intending to say i don;t like how they are so small and can't tow or haul anything. but as others have said the only thing they are meant to haul is ***. and apparantly they did.m i would say a stock st/ty will spank almost anything stock in the 1/8, but after that its anyone guess. which is why its safe to say the quickest truck is the sy/ty, the fastest is the lightning (145 mph top end, possibly quicker 1/4).
BTW, i was at the track 3 weeks ago and saw 4 different BONE stock 2000 Lightnings running 13.5-13.8 all day.... and MMFF was the mag that ran a bone stock 99 L to a 13.37 and then on the very next run a 13.39. of course they push the cars like no other mag. so that time is kinda flukey.
i don't think the 2001 L will improve by .6 as someone had stated, thats rediculous. it will improve by .2 tenths at least though with all that extra hp and torque, as long as u can make it hook!

I made my comment about the towing AND the speed, b/c #1 the Lightning is a daily driver to me. and #2 I have 1 show car, and 1 almost finish race car up in Colorado to tow around. So, when I come up to a Vette, Camaro, Mustang, AND syclones/typhoons and I beat them in a race, whether it be street or strip racing, and then I can drive to Col. and hook up my other car, or a boat, I feel pretty damn special!! If I was just going to two something, fine, i'd get a loaded F-250 or the like, but I wanted to race as well, and the Lightning suits my needs, as a truck, and as one fast mother******!!!
Oh, and BTW, I'm 19 so no towing around a ball and chain and two brats. Just me and a cute woman...

*yawn*
ive seen 94-95 stock lightnings do mid to high 14s all night long...ive seen 99 stock lightnings run low 14s all night long.
i have vid footage of a 99 lightning in the high 13's but with the boost cranked and a mild custom chip installed...i dont know about you guys, but thats not considered stock in my book.
lets compare....
on a bad day/night, i'll run 13.8s-13.7s on a fully stock syclone with stock chip, 93 octane pump gas.
i can run back to back 13.5s - 13.4s, 1.80 60ft's as long as long as i please....i have yet to see a stock lightning of any year capable of that kind of performance. i've set up races numerous times with the lightnings when they show up at the track, i walk away with the win each time, times slips and lots of vid footage to prove it...notibly, they do seem to get the edge around the 1/8th when you can slowly start seeing them creep...but by that time its to late.
Dont get me wrong, i can respect the lightning for what they are capable of (because there are some fast ones out there pulling serious numbers with serious mods), but thats about it.
For those willing, i visit orlando speedworld from time to time, im more than happy to run with any lightning that is either stock or close to stock to make it a fair race (seeing how im stock).....the cameras will be rolling.
btw...sy2173, where is my vid of me pulling 10 car lengths on a 95 lightning after giving him a spot and a half on powertour?!
ok, im off the soapbox...this isnt gonna help anything anyhow, everyones hard-headed when it comes to performance and real numbers.....even me.
offer is still up for a fair race.
