Lightbulb 3.55 REARS ARE FASTER THAN 4.10

Boy, I'll bet this will get a lot of response. OK, here's what I have observed. Sunday, I was faster that 99SVT BY 8.68 VS 8.77. We both have chips pro0ms, filters, MT ET Streets but he has a 4.10 rear and I'm stock. We are running a 1/8 strip. He says he is having traction problems. I'm not. I had traction problems until I got the MT ETs. If he can't get traction with the same tires it must be the 4.10 rear. Since we are both running the best drag tire available for 16" rims, maybe I'm better off without the 4.10s until another tire/rim combo is available that is either tall, wider, or both. What is the experience of some of the others using 4.10s. My 60' are right around 2.0, sometimes a little less.

A Scientific approach...

NOT.

4.10 should be faster unless you have another upshift.

Silverbullet. You assume that everything else remains equal or the same, but they do not. Traction does not remain the same. The MT ETs cure the F1 traction problem, but they seem to fail with the 4.10s, putting one right back where they were before they started. The object of this exercise is to hear from some 4.10 guys who have solved their traction problems with the lower gears.(if they have)

Traction should not be an issue...
The tires need some more heat if he is burning them up easy... Or the tires are seasoned...

You are the one assuming everything is equal.
Two different trucks and two different drivers make a big difference...

Do the math, the 4.10s will be faster.

Cool

Obviously the 3.55s are going to be faster if they hook up and the 4.10s dont. Surprised to hear that traction is a problem with the MT ETs, but it is a huge problem with the stock rubber- that's why I lost to the 'vette the other night. Think I might take a trip over to Palmdale tomorrow and have them install a set of Cal-tracs (although I'm worried that they might compromise the handling).

Actually, 99SVT pretty much ruined his brand new MT ET Streets. The rubber was peeling of the edges of the tire. This is caused by excess heating of the tire by doing too much burnout. MTs do not have to be hot, heated to get good traction. (Unlike the goodyear or hoosier slicks, which require massive burnouts to heat up the tires for good traction) All you have to do with MTs is throw the rocks and water off. So 99SVT, I don't think suffered from tires that weren't hot enough. Yea, there are some driver differences between us, but Jerrow knows how to go down the strip. I suspect the hidden difference is our launch RPM. I start in pracitice at about 1500 and drop down 1-200 until the tires stop spinning and my 60' times stablize. Sunday, I could get a good launch at 1000-1200. I suspect he was trying 1500 or maybe more.

Noel, you forgot to mention that my 60ft times 1.95 to 1.97 all day long. You also forgot to mention that my best time out there was a 8.54, which was just a couple of weeks ago. You also forgot to mention that my truck is running bad, since I have a miss and probably some bad plugs.
Also, I have always had better 60ft times than anyone out there(besides Andre & Wyldman) while running on alot narrower tire (255 series DR).
The only reason our times were different was due to the fact that my truck was running slower and not that yours was running faster.
Just thought I would straighten some things out that were not clear in your post.

I'm wondering if the 4:10's are too much gear for what we have?? I am no gear expert by all means, but I have wondered if going to 3:75's wouldnt be a better choice. Again, I am just going off what other people people have posted here. I remember 1 person went from 4:10's to 3:75's & went quicker (dont remember who though)!!! I cant see why you wouldnt go quicker with the steeper gear, but if you cant get traction off the line due to wheel spin, then you'll lose, so whats the point??

How can your plugs be bad? You just got new plugs with your intercooler less than 10K ago and you're not running N2O. These plugs are suppose to last 100K. On Sunday I ran three 2.0 60's and the others were less than 2.04. Only a slight difference and I was probably launching at a much lower rpm than you. Mine was around 1000-1200.

Ok Jerrod. Lets trade trucks for one run. All you have to promise is not to try to set my slicks on fire and we will see what happens when we drive each others and launch in our normal ways. Might be interesting.

Not a prob, but I won't be out at the track until I find out what is wrong with my truck. Crush69 had that post about his blown motor and what he is saying sounds similar to mine. I hope not, hope it is just plugs, but could be worse.

::Very Stupid, but I must comment::

If the mans telling you there is something wrong with his truck....Then there is!!

Jerrod,
Dont waste the time draggin' it until you find your problem. I never race an injured vehichle, it only costs you more to repair later... Good Luck

Noelvm,
I ran like crap last Thurs. at FME night. Everyone beat me (even PFA). It must have been my 4.10 gears even though they are the same gears I went 11.99 and 1.72 60' with. Thanks for the help.
