Sticker on my 04's gas tank says "2001 Lightning" wtf?

I was changing my fuel filter today when I seen the sticker in the front of the gas tank that says "2001 Lightning". Why would a 04 have a sticker that says "2001"? Can someone check their truck for me if they have the time? The sticker is a big white one right on the front of the gas tank facing towards the motor. :help:

My 2004 L says 2005 and my 2001 L says 2001. Maybee you got ripped. Run the Vin number bud.

AustinSVT Dec 20, 2006 05:53 PM

mine says the same

emig5m Dec 20, 2006 06:12 PM

I always run the Vin before buying a vehicle, the dealer even printed a carfax for me. Just find it weird a 04 would have a sticker on the gas tank saying "2001 Lightning" on it! That scares me! I could see it saying 2003, but 2001??

mine says the same
Same as mine, or same as SVTLIGHTING's?

Oh ya, SVT themselves confirmed the vin as a 2004. But why the sticker on the gas tank? :(

Maybe they made a huge batch of gas tanks back in 2001, so they wouldn't have to make them any more?
What difference does it make? It's not like they are VIN matched. :D
Maybe the gas tank was replaced under warranty with one off the shelf?
over-react much? lol

I never thought, where can I find one?

did you ever think that someone left the gas door opened on that truck and it got ripped off. They then got a new one from the junk yard. Or the whole side of that truck was wiped out and they put a new junkyard door on it.

Why does that scare me? Think about it... Maybe the truck was wrecked and rebuilt with a 01? Maybe it's half 01 and half 04 now? Who's knows what it 'could' really mean...that's what scares me, no way of truly knowing the history of a used vehicle and what it's been through.

If I would of bought and owned the truck since brand new, no big deal, but buying it used, it makes you wonder about it's history why it has a 01 part on a 04.... Make sense?

Does the truck ride good? Track good? Is the fit/finish good enough for you?

See if the dealer will do an oasis report on the truck for you. I think they still do those.

sounds like you may have a 01 with a 04 VIN..Ive heard of this before. I remember in the Mustang world a guy who thought he bought a 98 Cobra but it ended up being a totaled and rebuilt 96. They had done a VIN swap on it because the majority of parts used for the rebuild was from a 98.

Look at it this way, a 01 is alot cheaper to insure than a 04!

Had to be the hardest pick to get (dark garage, couldn't see what I was shooting but knew about what area to aim).

Thank you so much AustinSVT for your time and effort! I really appreciate it! I was getting a little paranoid there! Freaked me out when I seen that sticker! I'll be able to sleep better tonight that's for sure! LOL!

Next problem... Now I found this barcode sticker on the supercharger that my 03 didn't have.... oh nevermind..

isn't that just a plastic shield on the front of the tank?
not sure because I don't own a gen2, but my gen 1 has a plastic cover on the front that just slips off of the steel tank.
