Post SVT Thunder

Motor Trend has a SVT Thunder Expedition this month. with Lightning engine, times are:
0-60 5.6
1/4 14.1@98

stock expy
0-60 9.2
1/4 18.9@81

how much does an expy weigh? considering those times are much better than SVT quotes for a 99 lightning

I think off the line traction has something to do with it.

That would be sweet although I wonder what the price tag would be, I believe BMW has the best SUV out there right now.

BMW may release a 400 something HP truck, all wheel drive.

What are the numbers and cost for the Shelby Durango?

MRBBQMAN:

Searched MT's website and could not pull up this article, current to Sept. 4.

Can you scan and download the article? Sounds very, read very interesting.

Article says that SVT will not be producing it... too many other 'high priority' projects?!

The Thunder will not be built, it was a Coletti toy.

Question

What are they doing to the engine to make it faster than our lightnings? Think it's possible to do the same to our trucks?

I'll have to look for that mag. i read it in.

Ok, maybe I was mistaken, It was Fords project Ranger SVT, Adrenaline.

I know you guys are gonna say NO way and your lying but here goes. FORD is producing the thunder right now and it is being sold in another part of the world.so you ask how does he know this? the fact of the matter is that Pat Barrett from Level 10 trans is been working on the project for some time now. the trucks are being sold in the Gold Coast region which is the middle east and northern africa.the difference between the thunder and this truck named after an arab sheik(mohammed ben sulaymed)or something near that name is that it has the 5.4l lightning motor but it is not supercharged it has TWIN TURBOCHARGERS. Pat tells me output is around 470 h.p. and well over 500 foot lbs of torque. He has worked on the trans upgrades for this beast to handle that power. he tells me that he is sending out 20 new upgrades for these trucks that are headed for Saudi Arabia. He has personally gone over to the middle east to work on this project. FORD has a beautiful huge facility over there which I saw in the various pictures that PAT has in his showroom of his trips there. yea and the wheels on this truck are lightning wheels.Pat said that a special release had to be signed allowing the use of the wheels on this expy. I know you are all saying YEA right. but it is all true. Pat at level 10 will entertain any questions you might have about this truck at 973-827-1000. It is not for sale in the USA, but lets hope that engine can make its way into our lightning engine compartments sometime soon. sorry for the long post. 95rcobra.

Dem Saudi's, they get the special treatment, don't they. Do you think our L's tannies could use those special parts that Level 10 is doing for Ford; or, is it something Level 10 will offer in the future to us. Gonna' have to go to the middle east and sneak some of those things over here.

I was going to stay out of this one, but 95rcobra is most likely spot on.

When I worked with Volvo and Saab from 1967 till 1991, I was involved in a lot of "special projects" for markets that do not, shall we say, have to worry about EPA, NHTSA and a lot of the alphabet soup agencies we and the other so called
"First World" countries so concerned about.

We sent some real "killer" vehicles to the Middle East area that would never pass muster in the Western World.

As well, in my automotive history archives, I have several notations regarding specific modifications to American origin vehicles exported not only to the Middle East but also Western Europe. Buick, for example in the late 1950's, specced a special camshaft (read 3/4 cam) for Western Europe as well as dual exhaust and firmer shocks and springs to cope with the speeds on the German and Italian Autobahn/Autostrada.

The Chevrolet Caprices you saw in the newsreels during the Desert Shield/Desert Storm era were also very specifically "tuned/eqipped" for use in that area with more power, different tire/wheel setups and cooling systems and so on.

Does not surprise me at all that there are some really nice combos available in that area of the world. Sometimes I think it would be nice to return to the 1960's here at home when you could buy what you wanted or could afford.

BadBolt,
I do not think there is too much difference in the trans upgrades he does for these foreign trucks than what he can do in his shop on our lightnings.so far I have had the shift kit installed and he has re-calibrated the valve body for even better shifts and driveability. I am thinking about doing the billett torque converter which he says will really make a big gain in performance.all I know is that the twin turbo motor would look great in my engine compartment.like I said give him a call and he will be happy to answer most of your questions.thanks 95rcobra

Bill Murray, you are right on the money. Ford has been building very high performance vehicles in other parts of the world like europe and australia for years now. no chance of ever seeing these vehicles in the states. we always get the short end of the stick.thanks 95rcobra.
