how many '99 L's blew the motor? (testing theory that they have stronger rods)

Just out of curiousity and keeping with the trend of a lot of threads started about blown motors.

How many people out there broke the rods in a '99 Lightning? I've heard from a lot of people that although they are the same part number as other years, that they are stronger in 1999 lightnings. maybe the manufacturing process changed, who knows.

Also, if you did break the rods in your '99, what mods where you running and why do you think it broke? (KB blower, nitrous etc...)

Taking into consideration that hte first chips available for the lightning were very limited in what parameters and tables could be modified. I'm guessing with the newer chip technology (like SCT) that this problem has decreased.

Someone should start a database.

That's not actually true... Even with the single bank tuning, the early Gen 2 tuning (99-00s) had almost all the same parameters as what's currently available in the 4 bank stuff. It wasn't till the 01s that stuff started dissapearing in the single bank access.

'99 here. 95,000 miles. 55,000 of those with 400/530 with my 6#. I've done the "infamous" kick down a thousand times, ran down the strip many times, taken it to 150 (ok, the 15 into Vegas does have a monstrous gradual downhill straight into town...), and boiled my tires off to the rim. The thing is still on the same plugs as when the 6# went on. Just this morning, I had to put a camaro to bed. The only way he was even visable in my rearview is because I had to drive my truck to work instead of my bike ('05 ZX6R) as I had to give a companion a ride home.:D The only time I ever heard detonation was in 40 degree weather down in Newport beach, and it didn't break. Tranny's still stock as well, barking the tires on the 1/2 and 2/3 shift with the FTVB as day 1. If my clutches are wearing out, you'd never know it. Who knows about the rod theory, but I wouldn't trade mine in on a new one to save my a$$.

Mabye they just had less or smoother hitting power? I had a 2000 L and my 2003 definitely has a harder hitting feeling power then my 2000 had....

I have a 2000 but my truck is stock, with 63,000 miles on it. But knock on Wood. NO problems yet.

127,000 miles and drive mines to work everyday until I get my beater I just bought going.. It's definitely time for some work on mines but no detonation etc. Still dependable and never had any major problems.. Only nagging problem is that I keep getting an exhaust leak and haven't a clue where it's coming from.. Even a muffler shop wasn't sure. Still scratching my head on that one! Other than that it's paid for, still turns heads and fun to drive..

Had an '03 max on stock injectors with KB to 496/562 in 90 degree humid south florida weather. Mind you with a blown #7 coil I still did 12.22 @ 111.

Now I own a '99 with 15 k miles, slightly modded. Rumor had it that the rods in '99, '03 and '04 had greater life ?? You know what they say about rumors.

Although you never know

Still a good question:D

Although mine only has approx 56K it's still an animal. No blown motor but I have pushed it hard in all weather conditions. The engine talks to me. It tells me to do things I don't want to. It makes me speed and play loud music. When I was going to buy my wife a watch for Xmas, the engine made me buy some new mods. My wife didnt believe me and I got in trouble.

I see dead chevies.
