It's probably better to let your truck sit for a week or two than to let it run at idle every day. Just a waste of gas and most engine wear happens during cold starts.

could be those big injectors you are hearing.
piston slap sounds like a diesel at start up and usually goes away in a few seconds. you can get a cheapo mechanics stethoscope (sp?) at autozone to find the source. i did and it was the injectors.
