What's that smell?

No, I wasn't eating beans!!!!

I noticed before, but even more so now with the windows open more that i get a wicked smell that comes from my exhaust when i get on the gas. I was wondering if this is from using the high flow cats that it's just more unburned fuel that i'm smelling, but definetely started since i put the high flows and headers on last fall.

I mean it's strong. My a/f at wot is 11.5-11.8.

One of my Dynatech High Flows recently 'went bad' i.e. desintegrated internally. Since then I get a naaasty exhaust smell. Very close to what you're describing. I got the replacement cat and I'm waiting on a new Magnaflow which I'm replacing some Dynomax race mufflers with. Once everything is put back together I'll monitor it. I'm hoping the smell improves. I'll let you know.

All that said, sounds like it's probably related to the high flows.

Dan how long did you have the cat before it went bad.. Talliwhacker has had his cats on the truck for less than a year and really hasnt driven the truck that much... he has magnaflow high flow cats...

Previous owner installed them in 7/03, so less than two years and probably less than 8 - 10,000 miles.

I asked Dynatech about it they suspect it may be running too rich / lean. I'm going to get to a dyno after replacing the cat / mufflers and check the A/F.

i know that when your running to rich the cats will give a horrible smell like sulfur i have had this happen a few times.

Talli....Mine stunk pretty bad when I first got them, but now it is fine. How many miles do you have on yours? I know you've had yours a lot longer, but I wouldn't doubt if I've racked up more miles already!

I have the full JDM exhaust on the truck for a couple thousand miles now, and also have a bad odor upon going WOT. My AF ratio is approx 11.9 so it is not excessively rich.
I am going to assume it is normal with this setup and may add a "scent" to the fuel to mask this issue.

Ok so I'm driving the other day and there's a guy towing a boat in front of me.

The name of the boat was GOOCH. Hahahahahahahaha.

Carla will vouch for it, i was hysterically laughing, she didn't see the humor in it.

Thanks for the replies guys. The only other thing i thought of it i was using Hess gas........but i've since filled with Mobil and made no difference.

Has to be the cats......or lack there of I should say.
